“I always take refuge in Guha (another name for Murugan), the son of Rudra (Lord Shiva), and the leader of the gods' army.”
Subrahmanya Shasti Vratam Katha
The Vratam is undertaken by devotees to celebrate Murugan’s victory over Tarakasura. As per the legend, the powerful demon Tarakasura was harassing the gods and sages. Thanks to a boon, he could only be defeated by Lord Shiva’s son. The gods prayed to Shiva and Parvati to have a son. Born from the 3rd eye of Shiva as 6 sparks of fire, Murugan was raised by the Karthigai Penngal. Parvati fused the six infants into one child with 6 heads. Murugan became the commander of the gods’ army. On Shasti, or the sixth day of the waxing moon, he led the gods in battle against Tarakasura and his brothers. With the divine Vel or spear that Parvati had given him, he defeated the demons and restored Dharma in the universe. Thus, Subrahmanya Sashti Vratam celebrates the victory of good over evil.
