Kalasha Pooja Procedure, Requirements and Poojan Vidhi

Kalasha Pooja is a very ancient Indian spiritual practice. The kalash is a representation of the deity that is invoked to reside in the kalasha. The kalash or pot is usually made of bronze or copper.
During rituals, it is filled with water, coins, or jewels, and then an inverted coconut is placed on top. At this point, it is called a Poorna kalash or Poorna kumbh. Poorna-kalash is present in most of the daily or special Poojas that are performed in Hindu homes.
Kalasha Pooja Requirements
The requirements for the Pooja are limited. The items you need to complete the Pooja include the following:
- A bronze or copper pot.
- Water, coins or any other precious items to fill the pot
- Mango or betel leaves to place on top of Kalash.
- Coconut to be place in an inverted position on the kalash
- Flowers and incense sticks
- Camphor to perform aarti
- Sweets like Kesari or Sakkara Pongal to offer as neivedyam and prasadam.
Why do we worship the Kalash?
Kalasha Pooja is performed in order to fulfill certain desires. It could be for the welfare of one’s family or oneself, or for attaining wealth, good health, education, marriage, children, victory in court cases, success in various endeavors, etc.
Kalasha Pooja Procedure
Kalasha Pooja procedure is quite simple and can be performed at home. Prayers are offered to a deity after inviting the deity (a god or goddess) to reside in the kalash and fulfill one’s desires and wishes.
During the Kalasha Pooja, the devotee forms a bond with the deity to receive his/her divine grace and blessings every day. Performing Kalash Pooja is said to fill the house with sacred and positive energy. It can also elevate one’s spiritual power and bring them closer to god.
Kalash Pooja Vidhi or Procedure
The Pooja can be performed either in the morning or evening. The following steps are part of the procedure.
The first step is to find a place to keep the kalash for 21 days. It should not be disturbed during this time. Once this is over, the next step is to clean the area well. Following this, draw a beautiful rangoli, and take a platform or a small stool. Check it for sturdiness and then cover it with a white cloth.
Take a coconut. Apply some turmeric paste evenly on it and ensure that it is covered entirely in turmeric. Then keep it aside for a while to dry.
Take a copper or brass pot (kalash) and fill it with water or coins or jewels. Add a little haldi and kumkum. If you filled the pot with water, then put some Tulsi leaves and few coins in it. Once the kalash has been filled, it’s time to close it. Now place the mango leaves with their stalks dipped in water so that they spread outwards. Now place the turmeric applied coconut on the leaves. Now you are all set to do your Poorna kalash pooja.
Place the Poorna kalash on a plate, on which rice grains are spread out evenly. Keep the plate with the pot on the stool or the platform. Decorate the kalash with flowers. Place the image or idol of the god or the goddess that you are planning to invoke in front of this.
Once the kalash is ready and in place, it cannot be moved for 21days. After arranging the kalash, one needs to perform the Sankalpa. Sankalpa is the process by which we let the deity know the purpose of the Kalasha Pooja. It is also to seek permission from the deity to worship them so that they will fulfill our wishes.
After the Sankalpa, do chanting, as one needs to worship the deity with great dedication. Chant the Moola Mantra associated with the deity being worshipped for108 times. Do not forget to offer akshata and flowers to the kalash every time you finish a chant. After this, offer prasadam to the deity and kalash and bow before them with humility and devotion. Continue this procedure for 21 days.
After 21 days, remove the kalash from its place and sprinkle the energized water of the kalash all around your house. If you put coins, take some of them and keep them in your purse, pooja area, and money lockers. This is said to ensure a continuous flow of money. Donate the rest of the coins to a temple or use them for helping people around you.
The coconut kept on the kalash can be used as prasad, and it can also be used for cooking. As the Pooja is very simple and easy, anyone can perform it at home.
