All about Aadi Pooram

Aadi Pooram is not only the birthday of Andal, but also the day when Goddess Shakti came to Earth. ‘Aadi’ refers to the 4th month in the Tamil calendar, and ‘Pooram’ refers to one of the 27 constellations or Nakshatras in Vedic astrology.

Most Tamilians are familiar with Andal’s story - her devotion to Sri Ranganatha, a form of Lord Vishnu, and union with him. Vishnu temples in Tamil Nadu celebrate Aadi Pooram with great fanfare. It is also celebrated in Shakti temples. In Shiva temples, devotees celebrate Aadi Pooram as ‘Valaikappu,’ a bangle ceremony. On this occasion, offerings of glass bangles are made to Andal during the Pooja and distributed among devotees later. Female devotees believe that wearing these bangles will enable them to have progeny. Pregnant women believe that the bangles can protect the child in their womb from evil forces.

Story of Andal

Andal was born in Srivilliputhur, a small town in Tamil Nadu. Periyalwar, the chief priest of a temple, found her as a baby in the garden of the temple where he worked. He took her and raised her as if she were his own child. She was also called Kothai or Goda Devi.

Even as a child, Andal was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu, especially in His form as Sri Ranganatha, the presiding deity of Srirangam, a renowned temple in Tamil Nadu. She would make garlands of fresh flowers and offer them to the deity with ardent love and devotion every day. She felt that she was Ranganatha’s bride and often expressed her desire to unite with him, especially in her poems "Tiruppavai" and "Nachiar Tirumozhi."

Andal’s love and devotion turned her into a symbol of bhakti (devotion). Her poems, steeped in religious fervor and emotional ardor, are cherished by devotees across generations.

Aadi Pooram Rituals

During Adi Pooram, temples dedicated to Andal are beautifully decorated with lights, flowers, and other decorations. There are special processions where the temple deities are carried in palanquins and taken around the streets as devotees sing devotional songs and hymns and chant Mantras.

A highlight of the festival is the re-enactment of the marriage between Vishnu and Andal. This ceremony is called "Andal Kalyanam," and hordes of devotees come to witness the grand affair.

Aadi Pooram is a 10-day festival. It is held in all Vishnu temples in Tamil Nadu. Aadi Pooram is on the 10th day. It coincides with the nuptials of Andal and Sri Ranganathaswamy, called ‘Thirukalyanam’.

On Aadi Pooram, women rise early and begin their preparations. They draw beautiful kolams or rangoli designs to decorate their homes. As Andal loves lotus flowers, the color red, and kalkandu rice, the women prepare these and offer them to her.

Meanwhile, in the temples, the goddess is beautifully adorned with fine clothes, garlands, and jewelry. An elaborate feast is also prepared and offered to the goddess. Every family in the community contributes to the feast. Huge crowds visit the temples to take part in the ceremony.

Traditional music accompanies the special rituals performed on this day. The celebrations go on late into the night. Once the ‘aarti’ is performed, the devotees are given food.

It is also the practice to read the ‘Thiruppavai’ and ‘Lalitha Sahasranamam’ on this auspicious occasion.

The Aadi Pooram celebrations in the Andal temple at Srivalliputtur, the birthplace of Aandal, are very elaborate. It is a 12-day festival. Srirangam Sri Ranganatha Temple also celebrates the festival grandly for ten days. The grand nuptials of Ranganatha and Andal take place on the final day of the festival. Unmarried girls who worship Goddess Andal on this day may soon tie the knot, according to the belief. Additionally, when Aadi Pooram falls on a Friday, it is considered even more auspicious. The celebrations are even more elaborate in this case.
