Goddess Durga, the divine personification of Goddess Shakti (Parvati) manifested herself in nine forms, who are worshipped and celebrated during the nine days of Navratri. Devi Shailputri is the first among the nine forms of Goddess Durga and is propitiated on the first day of Navratri. Devi Shailputri is the Goddess of purity and a form of mother nature called Prakriti – the one preserves all living forms on earth – humans, plants, animals, trees and every little living thing in the universe.
As she is the daughter of Parvat Raj Himalya (King of mountains), ‘Shailputri’ is adored as the daughter of the mountains. Devi Shailputri is worshipped along with Lord Shiva, her consort. She is symbolized with a lotus flower in left hand and a Trishul (trident) in her right hand. Her forehead is adorned with a crescent Moon and bull stands as her vehicle, which bagged her the name Vrisharudha. Parvati and Hemavati are other names of Mother Shailputri.
According to Shiva Purana, Devi Sati, daughter of Prajapati Daksha was married to Lord Shiva against her father’s wishes. Once, Daksha organized a huge yagna (sacred fire ritual) for which he invited everyone except Sati and Shiva. Sati was intolerable of the insult and burnt herself to death in the yagna. Lord Shiva got extremely hurt at this sight and isolated himself in deep penance for thousands of years.
Sati was reborn as Parvati or Shailputri as the daughter of King of Himalayas and hunted her search for Lord Shiva. After several endeavors, she married Shiva.
Mother Shailputri symbolizes the Mooladhara Chakra or root chakra – the ultimate gateway to spiritual awakening. Hence, one must begin the Pooja on the first day of Navratri to Devi Shailputri by energizing the Mooladhara Chakra and offer rituals to the Mother with pure heart and devotion to receive her eternal blessings.
