Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the third day of Shukla Paksha, the waxing lunar phase, in the month of Vaishakha (May-June), and it is one of the most auspicious days for Hindus. The day is ideal for new beginnings, whether it is a new activity, venture, construction, business, etc. The belief is that what is begun on this day keeps growing indefinitely.
People usually buy gold on this day. Gold is seen as a good investment by many people, as it is a high-value commodity, and its value keeps increasing with time. So buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to multiply the buyer’s gold reserves throughout the year.
Here are some traditions that explain why buying gold on this day can increase your good fortune.

 Get Lord Kubera’s blessings
Long ago, Lord Kubera, the son of Vishrawava, ruled over the land of Lanka. His stepbrother Ravana captured the city and all of Kubera’s wealth and banished him from Lanka. Later, Kubera led a devout life and did penance which gained him the blessings of Brahma and Shiva.
A magnificent city named Alkapuri was built for him by Viswakarma, the architect of the gods, near Mount Kailash. According to the Mahabharata, it was on the day of Akshaya Tritiya that Kubera was made the divine treasurer who had lordship over the wealth of the gods in heaven. On this day, he was also made the controller of the Northern direction.

Therefore, worshipping Kubera, the god of wealth, on Akshaya Tritiya 2021 will bring prosperity to the household. As Kubera got back a lot of gold on this special day, purchasing gold on Akshaya Tritiya is said to be lucky.
Pandavas and the Akshaya Patra
An incident from the Mahabharata reveals the importance of this day. Once, Krishna was visiting the Pandavas who were living in exile in the forest. Draupadi, the wife of the five Pandavas, felt bad as she could not prepare a good meal for their divine guest.

Krishna partook of a small morsel that was stuck to the vessel in which they had made the food and said that his hunger was satisfied because of their love for him. Krishna also gave a boon whereby the Pandavas received the Akshaya Patra from the Sun god. The Akshaya Patra supplied them with food on demand during their exile. What begins on Akshaya Tritiya day is said to grow endlessly, and so people buy gold on this day, hoping that their wealth will keep growing.
It is also a fact that many jewelry stores offer attractive discounts on Akshaya Tritiya. So it is an added reason for people to buy gold on this auspicious day.

Akshaya Tritiya 2021 is on May 14.
