Long ago, Lord Kubera, the son of Vishrawava, ruled over the land of Lanka. His stepbrother Ravana captured the city and all of Kubera’s wealth and banished him from Lanka. Later, Kubera led a devout life and did penance which gained him the blessings of Brahma and Shiva.
 
 A magnificent city named Alkapuri was built for him by Viswakarma, the architect of the gods, near Mount Kailash. According to the Mahabharata, it was on the day of Akshaya Tritiya that Kubera was made the divine treasurer who had lordship over the wealth of the gods in heaven. On this day, he was also made the controller of the Northern direction.

 An incident from the Mahabharata reveals the importance of this day. Once, Krishna was visiting the Pandavas who were living in exile in the forest. Draupadi, the wife of the five Pandavas, felt bad as she could not prepare a good meal for their divine guest.

Krishna partook of a small morsel that was stuck to the vessel in which they had made the food and said that his hunger was satisfied because of their love for him. Krishna also gave a boon whereby the Pandavas received the Akshaya Patra from the Sun god. The Akshaya Patra supplied them with food on demand during their exile. What begins on Akshaya Tritiya day is said to grow endlessly, and so people buy gold on this day, hoping that their wealth will keep growing.
