What is Kala Sarpa Dosha?

As per Hindu astrology, Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets that are depicted as the head of a snake and its tail, respectively. Rahu and Ketu cannot meet each other as they are in opposite directions at 180 degrees.

When all the major planets (Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Saturn) lie between Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope, it forms Kala Sarpa Dosha. If the planets are moving towards Rahu, it’s Kala Sarpa Dosha, and if they’re going towards Ketu, it’s Kala Sarpa Yoga.

Kala denotes ‘time’, Sarpa means ‘snake’, and Dosha denotes ‘fault’ or ‘blemish’. Rahu and Ketu indicate past life Karmas. The Dosha occurs due to bad Karma done by the persons in their past lives. The Dosha is also said to be the result of harming or killing snakes and also by offending Lord Muruga.

Kala Sarpa Dosha triggers many problems in one’s life. Unhappiness in the family, business losses, troubled married life, miscarriages, lack of children, eye, skin, ear, and throat problems, etc., are some of the issues. There may also be improper development of organs in the body, delays in marriage, litigation, money loss, etc. Though the natives make a lot of effort to do well in life, they will be thwarted. People whose houses stand on land where snake pits were destroyed will face health problems as long as they are living in that house.

Effects of Kala Sarpa Dosha

Kala Sarpa Dosha can affect your health and happiness. It can destroy your peace of mind for 40 years, or even longer, or throughout your lifetime. It all depends on the individual horoscope. This is why most people are afraid of Kala Sarpa Dosha. Kala Sarpa Dosha is more powerful during Rahu and Ketu’s Mahadasha and Antardasha.

There are 12 kinds of Kala Sarpa Doshas. They are Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhapal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karnataka, Shankhanaad, Patak, Vishakata and Sheshanag. These Doshas have the names of various snakes in Hindu mythology.

Wherever Rahu and Ketu are posited, it will affect the two opposite houses. Here are some auspicious and inauspicious results of Kala Sarpa Dosha.

When Rahu or Ketu is in the Ascendant (first House), health and marriage (i.e., 1st and 7th Houses) will be impacted. But the native will have courage and confidence.

  • If Rahu or Ketu is in the second House, problems in family life and longevity are likely. It can also cause financial ups and downs.
  • If Rahu or Ketu is in the 3rd House, it will affect ancestral properties and the relationship with a brother. But the native may be spiritually inclined.
  • Rahu/Ketu in the 4th House can cause problems at home and in business dealings. The native will find it hard to build and maintain friendships.
  • If Rahu occupies the 5th House and Ketu the 7th, it will affect the children and earnings of the native. It can also cause problems in love, health, and education.
  • If Rahu is in the 6th House, Ketu in the 12th, and all the planets lie between them, the native may face problems from maternal relatives. It also gives a spiritual inclination.
