Origin of Hanuman

Hanuman is the son of Anjani and Kesari and also the son of Wind God Pawan. Legend has it that while Anjani was worshipping Shiva, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya was performing the Putrakameshti Yagna to have children. He received the sacred pudding (payasam) and shared it with his three wives, and had Rama, Bharatha, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna.

As divine faith would have it, a kite flew by and snatched a part of the sacred pudding and dropped it while flying through a forest where Anjani was worshipping Shiva. Vayu, the Hindu deity of Wind, delivered the sacred dessert in Anjani’s outstretched hands, and she consumed it, and Hanuman was born.

Hanuman was incredible as an infant. Child of Wind God Vayu, he flew up in the air and tried to grab the Sun, whom he mistook for a fruit. Indra, King of the Gods, struck a thunderbolt on his jaw (Hanu), and he was named thus.
