Introduction about the Mahalakshmi Temple

The Mahalakshmi temple is an ancient Hindu religious shrine located in the financial capital of India, Mumbai city, on the western coast of the country. The shrine is situated on Bhulabhai Desai Road and dedicated to Mahalakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. The image of the Goddess is accompanied by the charming images of Mahakali and Mahasaraswati, with Mahalakshmi placed in the center and depicted holding lotus flowers in her hands. The three idols are richly embellished with several precious ornaments like pearl necklaces, gold bangles and nose rings. History of the Mahalakshmi Temple

The temple is believed to have been built sometime in 1785 and has an interesting anecdote attached to it. Apparently the chief engineer associated with building a causeway linking the seven islands of Bombay faced several problems. The Devi appeared in his dream and instructed him to search the sea near Worli. He did so accordingly and duly retrieved an idol of the Devi from the sea, whereupon he built a temple dedicated to her. The construction of the project was taken up in earnest and successfully completed without a hitch.
