Introduction

Mind is nothing but a bundle of thoughts that remain unending. Spirituality regards thoughts as being only the results of karma, our own actions of the previous births. Thus, mind carries a lot of the memories of the past and these give rise to varied emotions, some good and many otherwise. Such negative emotions can be termed as the impurities that pollute the mind and lead to inappropriate thoughts and actions, the consequences of which get carried forward as sins. Anger, desire, pride, jealousy, meanness, avarice, illusion etc. are the impurities that seize the mind and entice it towards sin. Thus, it is these impurities of the mind that remain as the cause of all our miseries. Freeing the mind of these impurities and keeping it clean is the only means of attaining peace and happiness in life.

This sloka is a hymn from the composition Sivananda Lahari. Meaning ‘the wave of auspicious bliss’, this is sung by saint Adi Shankara, in praise of Lord Shiva. It is believed that the sincere recitation of this sacred hymn can greatly help to clear the mind of its impurities.

Aasa paasa klesa dhurvaasanaadhi

Bhedhodhyukthair divya ganthi ramandhai

Aasa saateekasya paadhaaravindham

Chetha petim vaasithaam me tanothu.

The above sloka (hymn) is from Sivananda Lahari. Shiva means “Lord Shiva” Ananda means “Happy” Lahari means “Waves”. This sloka is a prayer dedicated to Lord Shiva.

MEANING:

The ceaseless divine smell is engaged in removing the desire, bondage and confusion within me, in the lotus feet of Lord Shiva. May his lotus feet make my mind a box bestowed with divine fragrance (good thoughts).

BENEFIT:

By chanting this on each and every Pradosha day, the impurities of the mind would vanish.
