Easter Sunday is one of the most widely celebrated festivals among Christians, which honors Jesus’ resurrection from death. The Easter date is variable but it always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25, according to the Gregorian calendar. For the Roman Catholic Church it is always on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. This happens on the third day from the day he was crucified, which happens to be called Good Friday. The entire week is observed as the Holy Week by Christians and they abstain from meat and alcohol. Easter is celebrated as the end of the Lent period and aims to spread the message of joy and happiness among all the people across the globe.
Easter Celebrations may have their roots in Paganism. Easter may fall on different dates each year. Instead, it is commemorated on the first Sunday after the full moon of the vernal equinox. Some people connect “Easter” to the Teutonic goddess of fertility and spring, “Eostre.” In Pagan religion, eggs represented fertility and birth. This was probably the inspiration behind the Easter egg.
Easter is also connected with an ancient spring African carnival, celebrating the resurrection of the husband of the “Great Earth Mother Goddess.” This resurrection had occurred 2000 years ago and is said to have close similarities with the modern day Easter.
Easter is the testimony of God’s love towards humanity, as the Lord fulfilled his promise of protecting all human beings from evil. On the third day of his crucifixion, Jesus rose from the dead. His resurrection signals the victory of good over evil, sin, and death.
The birth of Jesus Christ marks a prominent place in the world’s history, which altered the religious set-up and grew in popularity across the globe within a short period, making Christianity the biggest religion in the world. Easter reinforced the faith that God Almighty is highly benevolent towards human beings, and helped them to have confidence and faith in Christianity, and also attract may people of other faiths to Christianity.
Easter marks a day of happiness for Christians. It is celebrated with great pomp and glory. Churches around the world celebrate it with sumptuous feasts, services, music, candlelight, flowers, the ringing of church bells and people exchanging gifts with one another. The traditional celebration involves special prayers sung in praise of Jesus Christ. Other Easter features include the Easter Bunny, colored eggs, jelly beans, and lots of chocolate. There is an elaborate Sunday mass too, with happy music being played in the background. People may give to charitable causes on this day and there will be joyous songs and prayers in church to commemorate the rising of Jesus Christ.
The Lent period is observed for forty days before Easter. During this period, people engage in prayers, meditation, etc., and abstain from meat.
