Marriage is a special and life-long bonding between a man and a woman. To ensure a happy and contented married life, our ancient system of horoscope matching offers great help in studying the compatibility between the boy and the girl contemplating for marriage. In this system, the horoscopes or birth charts of the boy and the girl are drawn based on their birth stars and moon signs to analyze the compatibility of their natal charts for a happy married life. For this reason, our ancient sages have penned down twenty Kootas or Poruthams (compatibility factors) to be studied during horoscope matching, of which only ten Poruthams are considered more important in present day. In some parts of India, only eight Kootas are considered for marriage. The twenty seven nakshatras or birth stars are arranged in an oval shape in the sky which constitutes the zodiac system. The zodiac transits around the nine planets, thus influencing the nature, life events and physical and mental attributes of individuals on Earth. Hence, it is very important to analyze the compatibility factors (Poruthams) of both the boy and the girl deciding to enter into married life.

Rasi Porutham

Rasi Porutham represents the compatibility between birth stars or the zodiac signs of the couple. A compatible Rasi Porutham results in a prosperous and happy life for the couple. The position of the Moon at the time of birth decides the birth star and zodiac sign (rasi), which determines the temperament and characteristics of the boy or girl. Therefore, analyzing the compatibility between the fundamental nature and attributes of the couple is very important for a blissful life. Rasi Porutham also acts remedial for the absence of other compatibility factors. Rasi Porutham signifies the temperament of the boy and the girl contemplating for marriage. In general, the positions 6, 8 and 12 are regarded as hidden positions in any birth chart. So if the rasi or Moon sign of the girl or boy in any of the above positions, then the match is incompatible. If the rasis of the couple fall in the 6th or 8th position to each other, it is called Sashtashtaga Dosham. The 7th position of the rasi of the girl is considered most appropriate for compatibility. Hence, if the rasi of the girl and the boy are in the 7th position to each other, then the compatibility among them is high. All the other positions - 1st,3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th of the girl’s rasi are considered matching. If the rasi of the boy and girl are same, then it is called Eka rasi. For this kind of matching to work out, the girl’s nakshatra (star) should fall after the boy’s nakshatra. Except the stars - Krittika, Ashwini, Magha, Swati, Rohini, Hasta, Purvashada and Shathabisha, all the others stars where the girl’s star falls before the boy’s star are considered not matching.
