Purnima 2020
Purnima is the Full Moon or the Full Moon Day and may refer specifically to the night of the full Moon. This is a thithi, the lunar day that usually occurs once a month. This divides the lunar month into two fortnights, Shukla Paksha, the waxing phase, and Krishna Paksha, the waning phase. A full Moon appears when the Sun and the Moon are separated by 180 degrees. On this day, the Moon remains a well-illuminated full disc, causing high tides. It is only on Purnima days that lunar eclipses occur.
Purnima Significance
Also called Pournami, Purnima remains an auspicious day that can generate a lot of positive energies, and hence people make new beginnings on these days. It is also an occasion held as highly sacred for worshipping Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. She is believed to be available in trees like Banyan and Peepal at particular times during Purnima occasions. Hence people offer prayers to Lakshmi and her divine consort, Lord Vishnu, the supreme protector, on Purnima days. They also worship these trees during the sacred periods falling in those days. It is believed the divine couple can fulfill the wishes of devotees who pray to them on such Full Moon days and bless them with wealth, prosperity, fortune, and all-round wellbeing. This monthly phenomenon usually occurs 12 times a year. Special Purnimas
While all Full Moon days are held as auspicious, the different Purnima days have their own unique significance. These can bestow a range of benefits through the observance of specific religious practices on those days. Such Purnimas include Kartika Purnima, Magha Purnima, Sharad/ Ashwina Purnima, Guru Purnima, and Buddha/ Vaishakha Purnima.
Purnima Worships
While Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu are worshipped on all Purnima occasions, those remain as the special days for undertaking a few particular worships. Sri Satyanarayana Pooja can be cited as the chief among those, while Maha Mrithyunjay Jap is also another important one. Satyanarayana Pooja is dedicated to Lord Vishnu when people perform ceremonies and pray to him as Sri Satyanarayana. It is believed that this worship can get them the Lord’s abundant blessings and bestow them with prosperity and happiness. This sacred Pooja is also done after significant and auspicious events like marriage, purchase of property, getting a job opportunity, etc. as a means of thanksgiving to God.
Mrithyunjaya is Lord Shiva, and to him is done the Mrithyunjay Jap. It is believed that this can cure people of their illnesses and bestow them with good health and a long life.
