Ekadasi

Ekadasi refers to the 11th thithi, that is, the 11th lunar day. This is regarded as an auspicious occasion especially suitable for offering prayers to Lord Vishnu.

The Sanskrit word ‘Eka Dasi’ itself carries the meaning, the 11th day. A lunar month has 2 fortnights, divided by the phases of the Moon. One is the Waxing phase when the Moon keeps growing to its full form, and is known as Shukla Paksha, the bright fortnight. The other is the Waning Phase or Krishna Paksha, the dark fortnight when the Moon goes on shrinking in size. Ekadasi refers to the 11th day of both these lunar periods, and hence generally occurs once in about 15 days, twice a month, and 24 times a year.

Thus, these Ekadasis can also be broadly classified as Shukla Paksha Ekadasis and Krishna Paksha Ekadasis, depending on which lunar fortnights they appear.

But their number may be more in some years. Ekadasi 2020 belongs to this category when the occasion occurs as many as 28 times during the calendar year.

Ekadasi Significance

Our scriptures assert that the Moon and its movements have a strong bearing on the human mind and emotions. It is said here that on the Ekadasi day, the mind remains its sharpest and becomes capable of focusing at its best and operating at its maximum efficiency. Hence, this occasion has been identified by our ancients as the right time to undertake religious activities and also to successfully execute other crucial plans.

The Uniqueness of Different Ekadasis

Though more than 20 Ekadasis occur in a year, each one of them can be called as unique, and they carry their own significance. Of these, the Shukla Paksha Ekadasi falling during the Tamil month Margazhi (Dec-Jan) and the one coming during Karthigai (Nov-Dec) are of particular religious significance. While the former is known as Mokshada Ekadasi or Vaikunta Ekadasi, the later is called Kaisika Ekadasi.

In the year 2020, and amidst Ekadasi 2020, Vaikunta Ekadasi falls on 25th December, while Kaisika Ekadasi, on 25th November.

Ekadasi Worships and Austerities

Given its all-round significance, Ekadasi has become synonymous with prayers, religious pursuits, and the performance of various rituals.

This day is dedicated mainly to the worship of Lord Vishnu. Devotees offer prayers to the Lord, read and listen to scriptures, recite hymns in his praise, visit temples, perform ritualistic worships, and seek divine blessings.

Perhaps, the most important austerity that devotees observe during this occasion is the Ekadasi Vrat, when they undertake fasting and devote the time to the spiritual activities.

This Vrat is observed differently by different people. While some abstain entirely from food and do not take even water on that day, some others take a single meal or eat fruits. They all break the Vrat on Dvadasi, the next day morning, after prayers. It is believed that such an Ekadasi fast can ensure the wellbeing of the people and make them more pious and focused.
