Introduction

A malicious stare is known as the evil eye. It is generally born out of jealousy and is normally directed towards an individual or a group of persons. It is widely believed that an evil eye is very similar to a curse and that it can bring harm and misfortune to the people who are at the receiving end. Different religions, civilizations and cultures have devised different protective mechanisms for warding off the effects of such evil eyes.

This sloka invokes Lord Bhairava, describes his form and bows to him in prayer. Bhairava is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, the supreme God of destruction. He has a dog as his mount. He is believed to be a wandering God and the controller of the various directions. There are as many as 64 Bhiaravas, for whom, Maha Swarna Kala Bhairava or simply Kala Bhairava remains as the ruler. Kala means time and the scriptures regard Kala Bhairava as the supreme Lord of universal time and eternity.

Chanting this sloka will please this mighty God and get his blessings for the devotees, which can ward off the effects of evil eyes on them.
