Soundarya Lahari is a sacred hymn composed by saint Adi Shankara. Soundarya is beauty and Lahari is a wave and this ‘wave of beauty’ indeed remains as a literary work of remarkable beauty. This sings the praise of Goddess Shakthi and underscores her divine grace and boundless compassion in 100 slokas.

Shakthi is the universal mother and is the personification of the ultimate feminine power. She is pure energy. She is also Parvathi, the gentle aspect of the Goddess and being the consort of Lord Shiva, she remains as his power too. She is also known in many other names such as Devi, Sati, Durga, Kali, Tripura Sundari, Annapurna, Akhilandeswari, Lalitha Tripurasundari and Adi Parashakthi. This benevolent Goddess is said to govern aspects like fertility, love and devotion and her worship is believed to bestow the devotees with auspiciousness and all round benefits.

Mythology regards Rahu as the severed head of a snake. He is actually the northern lunar node who doesn’t have a physical existence and hence remains a Chaya Graha, the shadow planet. Rahu is a malefic planet who can ruin things, stop ventures from fructifying at the very last moment and thus can cause frustrations.

This Soundarya Lahari sloka will be quite effective for Rahu Dosha and can provide good relief against his negative effects.

Rahu is one of the Navagraha (nine planets) in Vedic astrology and is paired with Ketu. He is depicted in art as a serpent with no body, riding a chariot drawn by eight black horses. This sloka describes about Rahu Graha.

Arthakaayam Mahaaveeryam

Chandraadhitya Vimarthanam

Simhikaa Garbha Samboodham

Tam Rahoom Pranamaamyaham

I Prostrate to Rahu who is the son of Simhika, who only has a half body but yet possesses extraordinary power, who is the oppressor of the Moon and the Sun.

This is a sloka (hymn) of Soundarya Lahari (Waves of Beauty) written by Shri Adi Shankracharya. The verses of this sloka eulogize the dance performed by Goddess Parvati and Her consort Lord Shiva.

Vinasam kinaso bhajati dhanado yati nidhanam;

Vitandri mahendri vithathirapi sammeelitadrsaam

Maha-samhare smin viharati sati tvat-patirasau.

O Mother! Virinchi (Brahma) the creator reaches dissolution. Vishnu attains death. Kinas (Yama), the God of death even tastes destruction. Dhanada (Kubera) the Lord of wealth expires. The group of Indras also, close their eyes one after another and go in deep sleep (death) and attain wakeless sleep. But Oh! My Mother! In this great universal ruination, your consort (Sadasiva) continues to sport with you.
