When We Celebrate Mother's Day

dateMay 7, 2020

Mother's Day 2020:

There is a famous saying that goes: God created mothers because He couldn’t be everywhere. It sums up the essence of motherhood. To most of us, God is an omnipotent and omnipresent entity who keeps a watchful eye on us to see that we commit no wrong and stay safe from the dangers in this world. These are also the duties of a mother – to ensure that her children do not stray from the straight and the narrow, and that they are protected from harm. A mother’s love has no equal. The Bible tells the story of King Solomon who faced a dilemma when two women came to him with a dispute. Both claimed to be the mothers of the same baby. The wise king solved the conundrum by decreeing that the baby be cut into two halves, and one half be given to each of the two women. Immediately, the real mother gave up her claim to the baby and said that the other woman could have the child. But the other woman betrayed no emotion at all over the king’s judgment, and was willing to abide by it. From this, the king realized who the actual mother of the baby was. This story serves to highlight the love of a mother, which is as boundless as an ocean.

Being a mother is no easy task. Women often have to sacrifice a lot to do justice to this role. But most do so willingly, for nothing can replace a mother’s love and affection. No amount of money can buy anything equivalent to it. That is why the world celebrates Mother’s Day. A day that honors all the mothers of the world and acknowledges their love, devotion, and dedication to their children and families, as well as their countless sacrifices.

The world celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May, every year.

Of course, one day is insufficient to celebrate our mothers. We need to do it every day by letting them know how much we appreciate all the things they have done and continue to do for us, and by doing all that we can to make their lives happier and more comfortable.

History of Mother’s Day

The person behind the founding of Mother’s Day is a lady called Anna Jarvis, who was a peace activist. She also cared for soldiers who were wounded in the American Civil War and was also working on issues related to public health. In 1908, she held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. This is the place where the International Mother’s Day Shrine is. Her mother had passed away three years earlier, and around that time, she had also begun a campaign to recognize Mother’s Day as a holiday in the US. It was her wish that mothers should be given their due in society, which did not usually acknowledge their contributions to the family. Initially, her request for the holiday was denied, but by 1911, it was approved, and the holiday was observed in all American states. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the US, signed a proclamation which designated the second Sunday in May as a national holiday to honor mothers. Thus, Mother's Day came into existence in the USA, and soon, countries all over the world began to observe and celebrate it.

Mother's Day is a good occasion to express our respect and love for mothers. It is essential to honor all mothers’ contributions and their valued role in society. The maternal bond is very sacred, and to honor it is our duty. Behind every happy and successful child is a mother, whose love and care nurtured them from infancy to adulthood.

Everyone has heard of the world-famous scientist, Albert Einstein, but how many know that without his mother, his destiny might have been quite different? Once, when Albert was in elementary school, his teacher sent him home with a note. Albert could not read, so his mother read it out to him. As she read it, tears filled her eyes. She told Albert that as he was very smart, his teachers felt that they had nothing more to teach him and that they felt he would change the world.

In the days that followed, it was Albert’s mother who took upon herself the task of teaching Albert. He later became a very famous physicist, winning the Nobel Prize. Many years later, after his mother had passed away, Albert chanced upon his teacher’s letter and discovered what was actually in it. She had written that he was dumb and would never amount to anything in life. It was Albert’s turn to shed tears, remembering the mother who had refused to give up on her son and helped him discover his true potential.
