Lord Shiva:

Lord Shiva is one of the Holy Trinity of Hindu Pantheon and considered as the Supreme Lord Head who is highly mystical. He is referred to as “Adi Yogi”, as he always meditates, and is the form of extreme vibration. He is mostly worshipped as  “Linga”, and is highly benevolent.

Legend of Karthigai Deepam:

Once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu had the debate over supremacy of creation. In order to resolve the debate, Lord Shiva, who is the supreme head of the world made a huge Infinite Pillar of Light, by piercing the three worlds. Lord Vishnu took the Upwards direction to find the beginning or the starting point of the light, and Lord Brahma started to move in the downward direction. Both the Lords were traveling over the infinite form of light to find the starting and end of the light. While they were continuing their journey, Lord Brahma lied that he saw the end, whereas Lord Vishnu accepted his defeat.

This lie of Lord Bhrama made Lord Shiva very angry and cursed Lord Brahma that despite being the Universal Creator, he would not be worshipped. Thus there are no separate temples, are worship centers for Lord Brahma. Lord Shiva then appeared in the form of Lord Lingothbavar, which denotes the infinite pillar of light. It is also believed that the great amass of Light then cooled down into “Thiruvannamalai”, on which Lord Arunachaleshwara resides.

Conclusion:

Being the lord of the cosmos, he manifests himself in the form of the supreme fire, which is worshipped by the devotees on the day of Karthigai Deepam by placing a lot of lamps. On the contrary, the lie of Lord Brahma has brought him a great debacle and has also made a great dent for his personality. It is also believed that Lord Shiva, being the supreme head will protect his devotees, who pray to him with piety and properly follow the Karthigai Deepam rituals.
