Karthigai Deepam festival is one of the important festivals of Hindu Pantheon, where it is celebrated with pom and piety across Tamilnadu, Kerala, and Andrapradesh. This year, the Karthigai Deepam festival is celebrated on the 29th of November. This festival is celebrated on full moon days of the Tamil month of Karthigai. Many temples will celebrate this festival, by lighting a  lot of lamps and making special Puja. Many houses will be decorated with lamps too. This is one of the important festivals of Hindus. Rituals during Karthikai Deepam at Houses:

On this day, people clean their houses and put rangoli or Kolam in front of their house to welcome the Gods and Goddess. Kolam or Rangoli is an art form, where people draw figurines, and images or even simple patterns with white chalk powder. Many people use colors to fill the Kolams, which gives the festive look. The lamps are then placed inside the house, and also outside the house. Earthern Lamps or “Agal Vilaku” is kept on the top of the Kolam.

Many people fast on this day and abstain from eating any solid food. The entire day is filled with prayers, and chantings. Many people would visit their favorite temple on this day, and make elaborate prayers. All the lamps which are made of different metals, earthenwares, alloys with different shapes like “Lakshmi Villaku” which is shaped like a woman, Gajalakshmi villaku, which is placed along with elephants, Kuthu villaku, which has five petals, and “Agal Vilakku” which is a small lamp are filled with oil, and cotton wick is lit. People in Andrapradesh, celebrate this day by lighting a big lamp with 365 wicks.

Many people burst crackers, and celebrate with their families and friends. People cook a feast and offer it to god as Neivedya. At night, they eat the feast together and enjoy as a family. Many people would distribute sweets and savories near their houses.

Celebrations in Shiva Temples:

Many temples in South India celebrate this festival with pomp and glory. In Thiruvannamalai temple, a huge pyre is made on a hilltop, which is visible across several distances around the temple. Special Puja and Homa are also conducted, and many people ambulate the temple to receive divine blessings.
