Shani Amavasya is the new Moon day that falls on a Saturday. Amavasya is regarded as the day of birth of Shani, and Saturday is the weekday dedicated to him. Hence, Shani Amavasya is considered to be a very special occasion for worshipping Shani Bhagavan and seeking his blessings. Significance of Shani Bhagavan (Saturn)

Shani Bhagavan can perhaps be termed as the most feared divine entity. He is one of the Navagrahas, the nine planets, who wield a strong influence on the lives of the individuals. It is planet Saturn that is known as Shani. Many regard him even as an Avatar of Lord Shiva himself, and hence, he is also called as Shanishwara. Though Shani is considered as an ashubhaGraha, an inauspicious planet, he can also be a great benefactor. He is just and fair and gives results strictly as per one’s own karmic deeds. He is also merciful to the humble devotees who worship him with sincerity, and can relieve them of their sufferings and bless them with many good things in life. People can undertake Shani worship on the Shani Amavasya day and get relief from a variety of evils plaguing their lives.

 

Favorable Activities on Shani Amavasya Devotees can wake up early in the morning on the Shani Amavasya day and take sacred bath by adding some sesame seeds in water. They can then install a picture or idol of Lord Shani Dev in the Pooja altar, decorate it with flowers, preferably blue in color, light lamps and incense sticks in front and offer Prasad to the Lord. Then, they can start the worship with a resolve to observe a Vrat or fast on that day and to perform the pooja. They can then chant the Shani Mantra ‘Om Pram Prim Prom Sah Shanaye Namah’ with sincerity and faith for 11000 times. Prayers can then be offered seeking the Lord’s blessings and his protection from negativities like black magic, evil eyes and harmful energies. The pooja can then be concluded with an Aarti. Devotees can do generous charity to the Brahmins and the poor, and also donate black color consumables that are dear to Shani. They can then observe a complete fast during the day and complete it after sunset. Benefits of Shani Amavasya Pooja Shani Amavasya Pooja is considered as an effective means for getting Lord Shani’s protection and for earning his blessings. This can help devotees to come out of financial problems and debts. There can also be career development and business improvement for them; eligible couple can get blessed with good progeny; life partners can have a congenial marital relationship; and the devotees and their families can remain blessed with handsome wealth and happiness. Shani Amavasya also remains as an appropriate occasion for getting relieved of Pitru Dosha, atoning for one’s own past crimes and sins, and for getting rid of evil eyes and black magic. Some scholars following Tantric tradition also perform some secretive rituals on this day to attain certain special powers. Also, those in whose horoscope Shani is placed malefic, should not make new beginnings on this day and also, stay away from disputes; pregnant ladies should preferably stay indoors; and those having Grahan Yoga should avoid visiting places filled with negative energies. However, this day will be very good for everyone to engage oneself in some spiritual activities or the other and get divine blessings.
