Hanuman is one of the most beloved deities in Hinduism. As a great devotee and loyal follower of Rama, he plays a key role in the epic Ramayana. In fact, his efforts were crucial to finding Sita’s location in Lanka and also rescuing her from the demon king Ravana’s clutches.

Lord Hanuman is one of the 8 immortals in Hindu mythology. Some claim that he is an avatar of Shiva. It is said that his mother was under a curse which could be lifted only if she bore a son like Shiva. Due to the curse, she was born on earth as a monkey. Mythology says that Vayu, the wind god, played a role in his birth. So he is often described as the father of Hanuman. But Kesari, the king of the monkey race or Vanaras, and the husband of Anjani, the mother of Hanuman, is also mentioned as his father.

Hanuman was a mischievous child. He once tried to swallow the sun mistaking it for a ripe fruit. On seeing this, Indra became alarmed and sent his thunderbolt, Vajra, at him. Hanuman fell down unconscious, and his jaw was disfigured, which led to his name, Hanuman, which means ‘disfigured jaw’.

An angry Vayu made the wind stop blowing. Finally, the gods mollified him by granting Hanuman many special abilities and powers. Due to his powers, Hanuman was invincible. He was known for his strength, energy, and courage, and hence, people aspire to be like him. They believe that Hanuman’s blessings can help them achieve impossible feats in life and success.

Hanuman’s Powers

Hanuman received many boons from Brahma. They made him immune to all weapons during battle and gave him the ability to change his form so that he could travel to any place he wanted. He also had to power to make his enemies fear him and to eliminate fear in his friends. Shiva also gave him some boons, whereby he had scriptural wisdom, longevity, and the power to cross the ocean easily. The last boon came of use when he had to go to Lanka in search of the abducted Sita. He also got a band from Shiva that gave him life-long protection.

Varuna, the god of the sea, gave him the boon of immunity from water. Agni, the Fire god, granted him protection from fire. The Sun god, Surya, blessed him with 2 siddhis or powers – Laghima and Garima. The first could make him very small, while the second could make him very large in size. He also acquired excellent knowledge from Surya. Yama, the god of death, blessed him with immunity from weapons and all diseases. Thus, he became immortal.

Kubera, the divine treasurer, gave him the boons of eternal satisfaction and happiness, while Kama, the god of love, freed him from lust and declared him a Bala Brahmachari or celibate. Vayu, the wind god, made him swifter than himself. The divine architect, Vishwakarma, granted him protection from all objects and weapons.

Brahma’s Curse

While Brahma gave Hanuman many boons, he also had to curse him on one occasion. Being a naughty child, Hanuman would trouble the sages who were doing meditation and penance in the forest. Finally, the sages complained to Brahma. Hence, Brahma cursed Hanuman, saying that he would forget his powers and would remember them only when he was reminded of them by someone else. It was Jambavan, the king of the bears, who reminded him of his powers much later.

Hanuman’s Superhuman Feats

Hanuman’s superhuman feats are described in the Ramayana. He fought an elephant and flew across the ocean to reach Lanka. He tricked Surasa, the mother of the Nagas, who was asked by the gods to test his strength and intelligence on his way to Lanka. Hanuman made himself small, then entered through her mouth and exited through her ear. After he was captured in Lanka, he set fire to the kingdom with his burning tail and unleashed great destruction before escaping. He also saved Lakshmana’s (Rama’s brother) life when he suffered a fatal injury during the battle against Ravana’s forces. He carried an entire mountain (Dronagiri) of medicinal herbs on his palm to save Lakshmana’s life. He tore his chest open to show that Rama and Sita dwelt in his heart.
