dateJuly 3, 2023

Introduction

Brahma Kamal, known by the botanical name Saussurea OObvallata, is a rare and unique flowering plant. It belongs mainly to the Himalayan regions and holds much significance in our spiritual and Vastu Shastra domains.

Also called Brahma Kamalam, the plant grows fundamentally in snow-covered, mountainous regions like the Himalayas and thrives at 3700-4600 meters altitude. It grows to a height of 4 to 5 feet and blooms during the monsoon time when its flowers start blossoming in the shape of a star with an enjoyable fragrance. Somewhat similar to a white lotus, it has pink tips. The flower head is purple and is concealed in yellowish-green bracts that safeguard the plant from the freezing, atmospheric cold.

But the plant is unique as its blooming is confined to the night! Yes, the flowers of this orchid cactus of the night-flowering species blossom only during the night, so its flowers can be seen only till sunrise. Thus, a flower could last only for a night, and it may take much effort even to see a blossoming Brahma Kamal flower! However, its flowers can have different hues, like white, pink, red, and purple shade.

Significance

'Brahma's Lotus' is what 'Brahma Kamal' means, and that highlights its spiritual and religious significance. The devout believe that while Lord Brahma holds this Sacred flower in his hand, Lord Vishnu resides in it. And they use this flower extensively to worship Lord Shiva in Temples like Kedarnath, Tunganath, and Badrinath, all nestled in Himalayan ranges. There are also beliefs that offering this flower to Shiva can please the Lord and fulfill desires, whereas wishes made when this flower is blossoming can help realize dreams.

Brahma Kamal Plant Vastu Significance and Benefits

But the Brahma Kamal Plant Vastu Significance is no less. Vastu Shastra, the traditional Indian system of construction and architecture, holds this plant in high esteem and declares that it can bring immense benefits to anyone. While on one side, it is believed that the plant purifies the environment and helps keep it fresher and greener, Vastu Shastra asserts that the Brahma Kamal plant attracts prosperity, good luck, and happiness and helps maintain psychological balance.

Vastu regards Brahma Kamal as highly auspicious and advises keeping it at Brahmasthan or center or a location of significance in the house. Being the abode of both Brahma and Vishnu, such a plant placement can eliminate negative energies and invite positivity into the house and environment.

Brahma Kamal also has therapeutic value and is used in some traditional medicinal systems, while people also utilize it in a few food items and beverages like soups and juices.

But Brahma Kamal Plant Vastu also cautions against buying, selling, or gifting this plant.

Caring and Growing

The Brahma Kamal Plant requires exposure to continuous but indirect sunlight. So, it has to be kept in a place with gentle sunlight throughout the day, which can prevent its leaves that can store water from becoming sunburnt and turning pale. Also, it is better not to change its location often, especially when the bud starts appearing; that can help its flower blossom well.

The Brahma Kamal leaves can retain water even in arid conditions, and hence, we should keep watering the plant whenever the soil top goes dry. But do not overwater, as that can cause rotting of the roots. Also, water the soil below, not the plant or its leaves.

Also, use the soil containing sand and perlite to grow Brahma Kamal so the plant doesn't remain in standing water. Also, ensure that the container or flowerpot has at least 3 or 4 holes for draining excess water. And in the case of the plant outgrowing its flowerpot, uproot it carefully from the existing container and shift it to a bigger flowerpot without damaging its roots. It is also better to avoid watering that plant for about 2 days, allowing it the settling time to overcome the effects of change.

People can also use phosphorus-based fertilizers, just before and during the blooming season, for a better yield of flowers. Also, as it can take longer to grow the plant from seeds, people can grow Brahma Kamal comfortably at home through leaf cuttings.

Honour to the Flower

While the Indian government honored the Brahma Kamal flower with a postal stamp in 1982, it has also been adopted as the state flower of Uttarakhand.
