Rahu Kaal significance and occurrence in Astrology

DateMay 21, 2024

Sometimes, even if we work really hard towards our goals, we might fail to achieve success. This is because timing can also play a significant role in our success or failure. In fact, in astrology, there are some times that are considered very good for starting new things and some times that we should avoid. One of these times to avoid is called “Rahu Kaal.” This term is used in Vedic Astrology. In Vedic astrology, we use the positions of planets and stars to make predictions about our lives. It’s an ancient system that helps us understand the impact of these celestial bodies on our daily experiences. Before we talk more about Rahu Kaal, let’s first understand what the planet Rahu is.

Rahu Kaal significance and occurrence in Astrology

Understand the Notorious Rahu:- In astrology, Rahu and Ketu are considered the most powerful and scary planets. Rahu is associated with our mental state, ego, and aggression and can sometimes cause trouble when paired with Mars. But it’s important to remember that Rahu’s placement and the sign or constellation it occupies in the birth chart is important. Even a well-placed Rahu in Kundli can bring significant benefits, like wealth and spiritual enlightenment. Just be sure to avoid Rahu Kaal, a time considered unfavorable for important activities.

What is Rahu Kaal?

Every Day, there is a specific time period known as Rahu Kaal, which is believed to be inauspicious for starting new projects or ventures. It lasts for 90 minutes between sunrise and sunset.

History Behind Rahu Kaal

During a big fight between the gods and demons, they were fighting over a magical pot called the Amritkalash, which had nectar that could make them immortal. To stop the fighting, Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the pot and prayed to Lord Vishnu for help.

Lord Vishnu then turned into a beautiful woman named Mohini to distract the demons while the gods drank the nectar. One of the demons, named Rahu, pretended to be a god and swallowed some too. But the other gods recognized him, and Lord Vishnu used his sword to cut off Rahu’s head.

Even though Rahu’s head was cut, he became immortal because he had already drunk some of the nectar. This moment when Rahu’s head was cut is called ‘Rahu Kaal.’

It is said that during Rahu Kaal, the human body can be exposed to the highest levels of harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. In the past, when people traveled on foot or in carts, being exposed to the sun’s radiation during Rahu Kaal was considered harmful. Nowadays, it is still recommended to start important activities like travel well before or after the Rahu Kaal to avoid the detrimental effects of UV radiation.

Calculating Rahu Kaal

To calculate Rahu Kaal, you can refer to the Vedas, which outline specific procedures based on the time of sunrise. Begin by noting the sunrise time as per the Panchang for your time zone, and divide the Day into eight equal segments. Skip the first segment, as Rahu doesn’t emerge during this period. Set the remaining time slots for a week continuously.

Each Day has a different Rahu Kaal period fixed for each Nakshatra. On Sunday, the Rahu Kaal period starts from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. On Monday, from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm, it is considered Rahu Kaal. On Tuesday, it’s from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. On Wednesday, Rahu Kaal is from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm. On Thursday, it is from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. On Friday, it’s from 10:30 am to 12 pm. On Saturday, Rahu Kaal is from 9:00 am to 10:20 am.

However, the duration of these periods may vary based on different geographical locations and the occurrence of transits in a Year. Also, if the days are shorter or longer, the times should be adjusted accordingly before following them.

If you need help calculating the exact period and learning about things that you should and should not do during this time, you can speak to an expert astrologer at AstroVed. They can assist you in calculating Rahu Kaal and provide you with detailed guidance.

What Are the Effects of Rahu Kaal?

According to ancient Indian astrology, there was a period of time known as “Rahu Kaal,” which was considered inauspicious for starting new projects or endeavors. Doing so during this time could bring unfavorable results. However, there are some exceptions, such as giving birth, which cannot be controlled. Contrary to popular belief, a child born during Rahu Kaal is not considered unlucky.

If you are continuing with an existing project or work during Rahu Kaal, it is believed that you will remain unaffected. It is said that Rahu, a cosmic entity associated with darkness and shadows, consumes the sun during Rahu Kaal, causing a temporary eclipse or “Grahan” in Hindu mythology. It is also believed that during this period, Rahu overshadowed the mind, causing it to go blank and hiding clear thoughts.

Rahu Kaal has the highest effects on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Other inauspicious periods include “Yamaganda Kaal” and “Vishghati”. To counter the ill effects of these periods, one can perform Puja (a form of prayer or ritual) related to the planet Rahu. Wearing Rahu’s gemstone, Gomed (Hessonite), is also believed to be helpful.
