Why We Celebrate Valentine’s Day and How To Make It Special

February 14, or Valentine’s Day, is dedicated to the beautiful emotion called love and to lovers throughout the world who celebrate their love on this day by giving flowers, chocolates, and exchanging gifts. But how did this day come into being? There are many stories about its origin. One of them has to do with a saint called Valentine. In fact, the day is actually called St. Valentine’s Day.
The History Behind Valentine’s Day:
The story goes back to the 3rd century. At the time, the Romans were converting to Christianity. But Emperor Claudius II, the ruler, was not a Christian, and he laid down very strict rules that the Roman Christians had to abide by. One rule said that they could not marry. He felt that this would ensure that the Roman soldiers would be devoted to Rome. But a Catholic priest called Saint Valentine was against this rule. He helped to get the soldiers married by holding secret ceremonies. However, he was caught and imprisoned. As he helped people get married, he acquired a reputation as someone who was a savior of love.
While in prison, he fell in love. The object of his affections was the jailer’s blind daughter. He was able to cure her blindness. Before he was executed, he wrote a love letter which was signed ‘from your Valentine’. This incident occurred on February 14th, in the year 270. Around 200 years later, the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church declared that this day would henceforth be known as Saint Valentine’s day. This is the reason for celebrating Valentine’s Day.
