Sri Balambika Ashtakam:

Sri Balambika Ashtakam is a Stotra or hymn that praises Goddess Balambika. It appears in the Skanda Purana. Goddess Balambika is the consort of Lord Shiva as Vaitheeswaran, who is the presiding deity of Vaitheeswarankoil Temple.

Vaitheeswarankoil is an important pilgrimage center in Tamil Nadu, India. It is near Chidambaram, which is famous for its Nataraja temple. The presiding deity at Vaitheeswarankoil Temple is Lord Shiva, who has the name of Vaitheeshwaran here. His consort is Goddess Balambika.

Lord Shiva was supposedly worshipped by Jatayu, the eagle which features in the Ramayana, and the Sun, Mars, and the Vedas as well, at this temple. So this place has many other names like Jatayupuri, Suryapuri, Angarakapuri and Vedapuri. Lord Shiva removes the sins and other problems of those who worship him here.

It was also here that Lord Muruga obtained the Vel or spear (from his mother, Goddess Parvati), with which he fought and killed the demon, Soorapadma. So the Muruga shrine here is very popular and attracts many devotees.

Many sages and Siddhas worshipped Lord Siva at this temple. The Nayanmars or Shaivaite saints also visited it and sang songs in praise of him. People believe that the deity here can cure even serious diseases. Hence the name, Vaitheeswara, the God of medicine or the healer god.
