Ratri Suktam:

Ratri Suktam is a Vedic hymn dedicated to Maa Kali or Goddess Durga. This Mantra forms part of the Rig Veda, the earliest of the 4 ancient Vedas. Given the antiquity of Ratri Suktam, it is even believed that this hymn could perhaps have remained as one of the earliest prayers addressed to the universal Mother, the ultimate feminine energy. It is also said that it could have been revealed in the Vedic texts for the benefit of humanity.

The Significance of Ratri Suktam:

‘Ratri’ means night, and Suktam is a set of Vedic Mantras or hymns. And Ratri Suktam can simply mean ‘the hymn of the night.’ The term ‘Ratri’ can stand for darkness and also ignorance. Ratri Suktam sings the praise of the divine Mother and seeks her grace for clearing the negativities that darkness brings along, and also for removing Avidya, the ignorance. It is also said that for the word ‘Ratri, the root is ‘Ra,’ which can mean ‘to give.’ This is believed to point to the divine Mother, who is the giver of peace, joy, and bliss.

‘Ratri Suktam’ also speaks about the greatness of Goddess Durga and hails her as omnipotent and omnipresence. This hymn glorifies her as the ultimate energy that permeates all the life forms on earth, provides purpose to existence, and is responsible for success in endeavors. She also remains the power behind the Mantras and can destroy all forms of negativities like diseases, enmities, and obstacles, and bestow prosperity, harmony, and happiness in life.

Ratri Suktam, a Rig Vedic hymn, also finds a place in the sacred text Devi Mahatmiyam, and this is generally known as the Tantric Ratri Suktam. Devotees who perform Vedic rituals generally recite the Vedic Ratri Suktam, while those who do the Tantric practices recite the Tantric Ratri Suktam.
