Medha Suktam:

Medha Suktam is a Vedic Mantra dedicated to Medha, the Goddess of intellect, memory, and wisdom. Saraswati is the Goddess of learning, Medha is considered an aspect of Saraswati, and hence, Medha Suktam is principally regarded as a prayer addressed to Goddess Saraswati.

The Significance of Medha Suktam:

Suktam is a group of Mantras found in the Vedas. And the term ‘Medha’ can mean understanding with full consciousness. Medha Suktam is a sacred hymn that seeks divine grace for knowledge and intelligence. 

Medha Suktam refers to a cluster of 6 verses from the Mahanarayana Upanishad, which is a part of the Taittiriya Aranyaka of Krishna Yajur Veda. Aranya refers to the forest, and hence Taittiriya Aranyaka that contains the Medha Suktam is said to be those Vedic texts that were learned traditionally in the forests. Medha Suktam is dedicated to many divine beings like Indra, Surya, and Agni, apart from Goddess Medha Devi, and encompasses in its fold, intelligence that ranges across a person’s instincts, character, scholarship, talents, and wisdom. Mēdhā dēvī juṣamāṇā na āgādviśvācī bhadrā sumanasyamānā |
tvayā juṣṭā juṣamāṇā duruktān br̥hadvadēma vidathē suvīrāḥ ||
Tvayā juṣṭa r̥ṣirbhavati dēvi tvayā brahmāऽऽgataśrīruta tvayā |
tvayā juṣṭa-ścitraṁ vindatē vasu sānō juṣasva draviṇō na mēdhē ||
Mēdhāṁ ma indrō dadātu mēdhāṁ dēvī sarasvatī।
mēdhāṁ mē aśvināvubhāvādhattām puṣkarasrajā ।
Apsarāsu ca yā mēdhā gandharvēṣu ca yanmanaḥ।
daivīṁ mēdhā sarasvatī sā māṁ mēdhā surabhirjuṣatām̐ svāhā॥
Amāṁ mēdhā surabhirviśvarūpā hiraṇya़varṇā jagatī jagamyā।
ūrjasvatī payasā pinvamānā sāmāṁ mēdhā supratīkā juṣantām॥
Mayi mēdhāṁ mayi prajāṁ mayyagnistējō dadhātu
mayi mēdhāṁ mayi prajāṁ mayīndra indriyaṁ dadhātu
