About Rama Navami

Rama Navami celebrates the birthday of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is the preserver and protector of the Universe. Whenever the world is threatened by chaos and anarchy, Lord Vishnu assumes human form and descends to the earth plane to restore the natural order of things. Lord Sri Rama was born on a ninth day in the Hindu month of Chaitra during the Shukla Paksha or waxing phase of the moon. Ancient scriptures acknowledge him as the ultimate perfect man who was born to annihilate evil and re-establish dharma in the world. The occasion of Rama Navami has been observed since ancient times, and the tradition of holding grand celebrations across the country continues to this day.

Among human beings, Lord Rama is regarded as an exceptional king, perfect son, ideal husband and an exemplary brother. His deeds and actions endeared him not only to the royal household but also to the masses in general. Taking his name (Ram Naam) is believed to be a divine mantra in itself and chanting the syllables ‘Ra’ and ‘Ma’ helps in elevating a person to a higher plane of existence, with the ultimate goal of achieving Moksha or liberation. The ‘Ra Ma’ mantra is called the Thaaraka mantra and is also considered to be a combination of ‘Namah Shivaya’ mantra and the ‘Om Namo Narayana’ Maha mantra, which are the seed mantras of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, respectively. Chanting  ‘Shri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram’ is also said to be an effective way of getting the Lord’s blessings. Just chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ is said to be a powerful way of connecting with the Lord.

Some of the other popular Shri Ram Mantras are:

Rama Mantra

Neelambhujshyamalkomlang Sita Samaropitvambhagam Pano
Mahasaikacharoochapam Namame Ramam Raghuvanshnatham

Rama Gayatri Mantra

Om Daserathaya Vidhmahe
Sita Vallabhaya Dheemahe
Thanno Rama Prachodayath

Whichever mantra one chooses to chant, the purpose and intent of the person should be pure, as the vibrations of these powerful syllables create tremendous energy and waves that have a profound impact on the physical and spiritual psyche of a person. The ultimate goal of the person should be to break the shackles of the material world and attain salvation.
