Muhurat
It is an age-old belief that any activity started or performed at an auspicious time will likely succeed and meet its objective. Our ancients believed, through their observation and experience over long periods, that celestial bodies like the stars and planets wield tremendous influence over human beings and their lives on earth, and identifying and choosing the time when these are favorably placed and doing or beginning anything significant during that period, can aid human efforts by providing the right thinking and guidance for the fructification of the endeavor and fruitful results.
Thus started the process of working out and arriving at Muhurats, the auspicious durations of time.
Here, let us briefly examine the Muhurat in October 2023.
Muhurat Calculations
We had our own traditional system of time-keeping and designed our almanac, the calendar, based on that time-tested system. This almanac is known as the Panchang, that is, 'Pancha Ang,' 'the one with 5 parts.' This Panchang takes into account five significant aspects of any Day for its calculations; these are – which weekday it is, what is that Day's Thithi (lunar Day), and what are the ruling Nakshatra (Star), Yoga and Karana of the Day. Those well-versed in such time calculations, like Pundits and astrologers, mainly consider these aspects for their analyses and decide the quality of any Day. When such a quality reveals auspiciousness, the Day and time become a Muhurat, an occasion propitious for performing auspicious activities, functions, or important events or starting with new or crucial academic pursuits, career responsibilities, or launching new business or trade ventures.
They must have also calculated the Muhurat in October 2023 through such a Panchang-oriented exercise.
Muhurats can be Specific to Events
Though Muhurats are all only auspicious periods, these need not be common for all activities. The measure of success can be different for different events. For instance, for marriage, it can be the longevity of the marital bond and harmony between spouses, whereas for business, success can be a measure of profitability and goodwill. Thus, it is the demands of an event that decide which aspect of the Day is given what weightage for arriving at the auspicious time for that activity, and Muhurat is worked out accordingly.

However, a Word of Caution
All said and done, the idea of Muharat, that is, 'auspicious times enabling success,' is based on personal beliefs, and there can be quite a few who do not subscribe to such a view or attach much importance to it. So, we would like to aver here that there can be no substitute for precise planning, determined efforts, hard work, and a never-say-die spirit for the fructification of any venture or activity. Still, people can add the Muhurat aspect to that list, thus enlisting Divine grace and making their endeavors fruitful.
