Aadi Perukku: A Festival of Prosperity and Abundance

Aadi Perukku, also known as Aadi 18, is a significant Hindu festival. It is celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi. This year the festival falls on August 3rd, 2026. Usually, this period sees an increase in water flow, creating conditions highly favorable for agriculture. The festival is celebrated to express gratitude to nature and to honor water, which is considered one of the five essential elements of life.
In Tamil Nadu,
Aadi Perukku is celebrated with great enthusiasm, particularly in regions along the banks of the Cauvery River. During the month of Aadi, the Southwest monsoon causes rivers and other water bodies to fill up. This surge in water serves as the lifeline for agriculture; thus, the festival is observed to offer thanks to water, which sustains life.
On this auspicious day, people bathe early in the morning, wear new clothes, and visit riverbanks with their families to worship the river. They offer items such as turmeric, vermilion, fruits, betel leaves, and areca nuts, alongside prepared mixed-rice dishes like tamarind rice and curd rice. Women pray for the longevity of their sacred wedding thread, for the family's prosperity, and for harmony among relatives. Let us also join in expressing gratitude to water on this day and pray for wealth, prosperity, and peace within our families.
