Remedies That Can Mitigate the Effects of Sarpa Dosha

DateNovember 27, 2018

Sarpa is a snake and Sarpa Dosha, as the name suggests, is a snake-related affliction. But the term ‘Sarpa’ here, refers to the malefic planets Rahu and Ketu, which are believed to be the head and tail respectively, of a mythological serpent. Hence, Sarpa Dosha denotes an astrological condition, which arises due to the positioning of the planetary Lords Rahu and Ketu, in a person’s natal chart.

A person is said to be afflicted by Sarpa Dosha, when Rahu or Ketu occupies the Lagna, the 1st House or 2nd, 5th, 7th or the 8th Houses in his or her horoscope. This is said to be severe distress which can affect people in many ways, like the break-up of marriage by death of a spouse or separation, denial or delay of progeny, and occurrence of accidents, and so, remains a much-feared affliction.

Remedies That Can Mitigate the Effects of Sarpa Dosha

Different Types of Sarpa Dosha

Unlike other planets, there is no physical existence for Rahu and Ketu. These are nothing but the Northern and Southern lunar nodes, the points of intersection of the orbits of the Sun and the Moon, respectively, and hence are known as the shadow planets. They are always 1800 away from each other and are at the two ends of an axis, and so, in a typical horoscope, they will be found in positions that are 6 Houses away from each other.

The different positions of Rahu and Ketu give rise to different conditions and result in different types of Sarpa Doshas. When Rahu is in the 7th House and Ketu in the Lagna, the result is Mangalya Saraa Dosha, and this can cause a delay in marriage for the individual. Rahu in 8th and Ketu in the 2nd House, results in Aayurbhava Sarpa Dosha, affecting the Ayurbhava, the longevity of the person. Rahu and Ketu in Houses 5 & 11, can create issues concerning childbirth and progeny and is called as Putrabhava Sarpa Dosha.
