What is Dosha?

A dosha is an astrological affliction that is reflected in a Kundli, the natal chart. This arises mainly due to the structure of the horoscope and the placement of planets in it. A Kundli dosha or simply, dosha can impact a native negatively and bring misfortune to him or her, in some form or the other.

Formation of Dosha

It is the disadvantageous or harmful position of the planets, that contributes to any dosha. Among the planets, there are benefic and malefic ones, and they both can become the cause of a dosha. A planet can be in an unfavorable position in a Kundli OR the Lagna, the Ascendant, or the Rasi or the Moon sign can come directly under the influence of a planet, that remains malignant in a horoscope. Any such scenario can result in a dosha. Apart from causing harm, a dosha can also hamper the beneficial results that some of the auspicious planets can otherwise give to the natives.

Some Important Doshas

Mangal Dosha or Chevvai Dosha remains undoubtedly the most well-known of all the doshas. The reason is not far to seek – yes, this remains perhaps as the most feared one. This apart, Kaal Sarpa Dosha, Kalathra Dosha, and Mangalya Dosha are some of the important Kundli Doshas.

Mangal Dosha is said to occur when planet Mars is present in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or the 12th House in a person’s Kundli. In that case, he or she is called a Manglik. Mangal Dosha can contribute to problems in marriage or married life.

Kaal Sarpa Dosha is another dosha, that can be troublesome in many ways. Planets Rahu and Ketu are believed to be the head and tail of a mythological serpent, respectively, and hence are known as snake planets. Kaal Sarpa Dosha arises when all the other seven planets are found bunched between Rahu and Ketu, in a horoscope.

Kalathra Dosha is another affliction that has a bearing on marital life. The term ‘Kalathra’ refers to the life partner, and hence, this dosha can cast its shadow on the relationship between the spouses. The 7th House in a Kundli is known as the Kalathra Sthana and Shukra, the planet Venus, the Kalathra Karaka. Kalathra Dosha is said to occur when Kalathra Karaka remains in Kalathra Sthana, that is when Venu gets placed in the 7th House in a natal chart.

Mangalya Dosha is a woman-specific affliction. ‘Mangalya’ refers to the sacred thread that women wear at the time of marriage. If any of the malefic planets like the Sun, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu is present in the 8th House in the Kundli, then the native lady is said to suffer from Mangalya Dosha. This may make the marriage short-lived due to separations or even the death of the spouse. But, if Guru, the planet Jupiter, or any of the auspicious planets aspects this House, then the effects of the affliction get canceled. Similarly, if the planetary Lord of the 8th House also remains strong, then also its ill-effects may get nullified.

Remedies for Doshas

There is a well-known saying that if there is a problem, there must be a solution to it, too. This can be true for the Kundali Dosha afflictions also. Implicit faith in the divine can act as the best remedy against any dosha. This can minimize the affliction effects and also bestow the natives with the maturity to face the impact with equanimity. People affected by these doshas can also seek the guidance of experienced astrologers or elders, and perform remedies like divine worship, visiting holy places and temples, praying to planetary lords, doing poojas and rituals, observing austerities like fasting, doing charity, etc.
