What is yoga?

Yogas are favorable aspects found in a Kundali. These arise due to the different kinds of planetary placements in the natal chart and can bless the natives with various benefits.

How Do Yogas Happen?

Yogas usually happen, due to one of these reasons:

•    The Houses 1, 4, 7, and 10 are considered crucial to a horoscope and are known as the Kendras or Quadrants. When specific planets placed in these Houses relating to one another, a yoga can happen

•    Houses 1, 5, and 9 are known as Trikona or Trines. These are auspicious Houses, and when particular planets fall in these Houses, that can result in a yoga

•    When some planets remain in opposite Houses 1 and 7 and thus, aspect each other, then also, it will be a yoga

•    The yoga can develop when planets are in conjunction in the same House

•    A planetary exchange too, that is, when one planet is placed in a House ruled by the other and vice versa, the result can be a yoga

Some of the Significant Yogas

The Kundli structure can throw up many yogas, and the following are some significant ones, among those.

Raja Yoga – As the name suggests, Raja Yoga is an advantageous condition equivalent to that of royalty. This yoga is believed to happen to a person when the following two conditions are met – one, the beneficial planet Jupiter should remain in the Moon sign Cancer in a person’s Kundli, or his or her 7th House. And two, planet Venus should also be placed in the 9th House. Here, the count for the Houses is done from the Lagna, the Ascendant. In the case of this Kundli formation, it is believed that the person may be able to accumulate immense wealth and enjoy luxuries and material comforts in life. This can happen particularly during the major or minor periods of Jupiter and Venus when these planets’ influence is quite strong.

Gajakesari Yoga – This is regarded perhaps as the most significant of the yogas. ‘Gaja’ is an elephant, and ‘Kesari’ is the lion, and both are mighty animals. When these two go together, one can imagine how powerful the combine will be. Those who have this yoga are also considered to be similarly strong and compelling personalities.

Gajakesari yoga can materialize when Jupiter is placed in one of these Kendra Houses, as compared to or counted from the Moon. That is, planet Jupiter should be placed along with the Moon in the same House or must be in the 4th or 7th or the 10th House from the Moon.

People who have this yoga will be influential, may enjoy political or administrative power, and occupy high positions. They may also be well educated and possess properties and wealth. They may, however, have to contend with challenges and enemies, too, but will be able to overcome any situation in life.

Dharma Karmadhi Yoga – This is said to happen when the planetary Lords of the 9th and10th Houses are placed together, as taken from the Lagna. These people may occupy respectable positions in society and may get involved in service-oriented or charitable activities. They may also devote themselves to religious pursuits or temple service. A few of them can even renovate or build temples and consecrate them.

Grahamaalika Yoga- A garland is known as Mala or Maalika. When planets are arranged serially on either side of the Ascendant, the natives are said to possess this yoga. This can help people to rise to higher levels in society and enjoy honor, respect, and recognition.

These apart, people can also have Guru Chandra yoga (based on the positions of Jupiter and the Moon), Chandra Mangala yoga (The Moon and Mars based), and Guru Mangala yoga ( Jupiter and Mars based), Budhaadithya yoga (Mercury and the Sun based), etc. These can also bring their unique benefits to the natives.
