Greatness of Lord Mrityunjaya Shiva Mrityunjaya is one of the powerful names of Lord Shiva. ‘Mrityu’ is death and ‘Jaya’ means vanquisher, and Mrityunjaya means ‘the one who has vanquished death’. Shiva once destroyed none other than Yama, the Lord of death himself in order to save his dear devotee Markhandeya, and hence, he came to be hailed as ‘Mrithyun Jaya’. Shiva is one of the supreme Gods of Hinduism. He is one among the Trimurthis, the trinity of supreme Gods who are responsible for the fundamental aspects of existence, that is, creation, preservation and destruction. Hailed as Mahadeva, the Great Lord, he is regarded as the God of Destruction, but is believed to assume many roles and undertake various functions, thus representing the trinity all by himself. He is generally worshipped in the form of Shiva Linga, known as Lingeshwara. Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Mantras are powerful incantations that are packed with immense spiritual energy. There are precise guidelines as to how a Mantra should be chanted, and when done so with devotion, they can create vibrations which can bring peace and joy to the devotees. Mahamrityunjaya mantra is dedicated to the three-eyed God Shiva and hence, is also known as the ‘Triyambakam Mantra’. It is said to have been revealed to sage Markandeya first. Death is also known as Kala, that is, time. While time can bring everything under its fold and thus, can annihilate anything, Mrithunjaya Shiva, as the conqueror of death, rules over this all-powerful time and eternity. He thus stands as a symbol of immortality. Shiva is believed to be a very compassionate Lord, who can be propitiated easily with sincere devotion. It is also believed that the chanting of mantras in his praise with faith can get his abundant blessings for the devotees, and these can remove difficulties, diseases, negativities and sorrows, and bestow them with immense strength and power. Shiva mantras also have the potency to relieve the faithful from the painful cycle of birth and death.

Mahamrityunjaya mantra essentially removes from one, the crippling fear of death. It also minimizes the intensity of sufferings in old age and instills equanimity in the mind, so that a person can enter the unknown realm of death fearlessly and travel beyond with tranquility. Shiva is said to be very fond of the sacred Rudhraksh beads and hence, using a rosary of Rudhraksh for chanting the Mahamrithyunjaya Mantra is believed to be very effective in propitiating the Lord. Reciting this mantra is also said to be a strong remedy against the effects of the much-feared Shani Graha, the planet Saturn. It is also said that the very place or house where this is recited will be cleared of inauspiciousness, illnesses and sudden deaths. It can thus help one to live life to the fullest.
