Diwali 2023: Avoid Money Loss by Not Keeping These Things at Home

dateOctober 19, 2023

If there is one festival that Hindus in India eagerly look forward to celebrating even more than others, it is probably the festival of lights called Diwali. Diwali is like the Christmas festival in the West.

This five-day festival is from November 10 to 15, in 2023. Like many other Hindu festivals, Diwali is also a celebration of the victory of good over evil.

The festival is believed to be a time when Hindus can receive Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings for wealth and prosperity. Let us find out more about the significance of Diwali and its rituals.

People celebrate Diwali by burning diyas and purchasing gold, silver, household goods, vehicles, electronic items, etc. They also perform various rituals to appease Lakshmi.

Lakshmi Ganesh Pooja Rituals on Diwali 2023

One of the main rituals of Diwali is the worship of Lakshmi and Ganesha. The traditional method of worshipping these two deities during Diwali is as follows:

Before starting the Pooja, clean the house. Decorate it with rangoli and lights. The Pooja items include idols or pictures of Lakshmi and Ganesha, flowers, camphor and incense sticks, sweets, roli, kumkum, saffron, akshat, abir, turmeric, gulal, sindoor, mica, mehndi, sandalwood, incense, big lamp, durva grass, cotton, Kalava, perfume, diyas or earthen lamps, banana leaves, betel leaves, coconut, betel nut, clove, cardamom, curd, honey, jaggery, coriander, fruits, wheat, barley, nuts, milk, kheel, etc.

How to Worship

• Place the idols or pictures of Lakshmi and Ganesha on an altar.

• Light the lamp and invoke Ganesha with the Mantra 'Om Gan Ganapataye Namah'.

• Offer flowers and sweets to Ganesha and seek his blessings.

• Offer every material thing, including sweets, to the deities.

• After the Pooja, distribute prasad.

Things to Avoid Keeping at Home on Diwali

Some things must be avoided or thrown outside to maintain the sanctity of your home on Diwali. Let's see what they are.

Don’ts For Diwali 2023

Do not lend or borrow money.

Do not offer anyone anything after sunset.

Do not donate anything that has (1) a sharp edge, (2) is made of leather (3) contains fire crackers. If you wish to donate such things, donate them with some sweets.

Keep the Pooja area clean and neat.

Do not scatter anything in the Pooja area.

The lamp you lit must glow throughout the night. Make sure that the lamp does not run out of ghee or oil.

After the Pooja, do not sweep the yard or the Pooja room with brooms. If you do so, the blessings from the Pooja may be lost.

The entrance to the home must be clean, as positive energy enters through it. Also, the entrance door must not squeak when you open or close it. It is not a good sign.

Rangoli is mandatory. The rangolis should not have any relation to Ganesha or Lakshmi, as it is not auspicious. Avoid Rangolis of signs like ‘Om’ or Swastika on the floors. Lakshmi’s footprints should not be drawn outside the entrance; they must face the inside.

Do not cook or consume any non-vegetarian food during Diwali. Avoid drinking alcohol, too.

Avoid clapping while singing hymns, even during the Aarti. Shouting out loudly or singing full-throatedly during the Pooja can offend the goddess, who dislikes high-pitched sounds.

Avoid sweeping the Pooja area immediately after the end of the Pooja. You can do it later, as the merits obtained by the Pooja may be erased.

Keep the house spick and span, with no clutter. Throw away unused things in the trash after sorting them. If some things can be used, donate them.

Keep the bathroom, kitchen, drains, and outlets clean. There should be no bad odor. All the basins and sinks should also be clean. The goddess does not like dirt or dust and will not enter or stay in such places.

Clean your home appliances, too. Anything that is in a bad condition should be discarded.
