Avani Masam 2023 Muhurtham Dates

Avani Masam or month is a very fortunate and auspicious month for Tamil people. It is the 5th month in the Tamil solar calendar. It is a month to celebrate festivals and marriages. It is also called Shravana or Shravan and is the holiest month in the Hindu calendar. There will be 2 festivals on the full moon day, which coincides with Thiruvonam (Shravana) and Avittam stars. There are many holy days and festivals associated with various deities in this month.

Avani Masam 2023 starts on August 18 and ends on September 17.

Avani Avittam, or Upakarma is one of the rituals observed in this month. It is observed by Brahmins in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Avittam is one of the 27 stars or Nakshatras in Vedic astrology. On this day, Brahmins replace the sacred thread they wear.

Avani month starts with the new moon or full moon, based on how the lunar calendar is interpreted, or with the Sun’s entry into the Leo sign, depending on the solar calendar. As the star, Shravan, dominates the sky on the day of Purnima (full moon) and the entire month, the month is also called Shravana.

Festivals in Avani Masam

Hindus believe that Avani month is a very holy and fortunate month, as many religious festivals fall in this month. They include Janmashtami, Nag Panchami, Shravan Purnima, Avani Avittam, Raksha Bandhan, Kajari Navami, Narali Purnima, Pavitropana, etc. It is the most auspicious month of the Chaturmasa.

Janmashtami celebrates the birth anniversary of Krishna, or the day he incarnated on earth. Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Nag Panchami is a festival to worship snakes. It is believed that this can appease the snake planets, Rahu and Ketu, which can cause many problems in people’s lives. The two planets are represented by the head and tail of a snake, respectively. Hindus worship snakes, usually cobras, with milk offerings on this day. Shravan Purnima is the full moon day which coincides with the Shravana star.

Narali or Nariyal Poornima is a festival of Hindu fishing communities in Maharashtra, especially around Mumbai and the Konkan coast. It occurs on the full-moon day of Shravan month. People offer rice, flowers, and coconuts to Varuna, the god of ocean and waters. Devotees offer coconut to Varuna and seek his blessings. They also perform a Pooja for the deity and pray for calm waters and protection from natural water calamities. Upanayana is a key ritual of Narali Purnima

The Kajari Navami Festival is very important for farmers in Chhattisgarh. It heralds the advent of the wheat and barley sowing season. Farmers pray to Goddess Bhagwati for a good crop. The rituals are performed only by women who have a son. On the day of Shravan Shukla Navami, women go to the fields and collect some earth in leaf cups. They sow barley in the cups and keep them in a dark room. The women clean the rooms, wash them with cow dung and mud, and ensure that sunlight or air cannot enter the room. They also decorate the floors with beautiful Rangolis, using rice solution. The designs include a house, a child in a cradle, a mongoose, and a woman with a pitcher. Finally, the cup is worshipped.

This ritual is repeated for 7 days till Kajari Purnima or full Moon Day. On all days, women pray for the well-being of their families and a good harvest. On Kajari Purnima, women observe vrat/fast from the morning. Then they carry the cup on their heads and make their way in a procession to a nearby water body to immerse it.

Pavitropana or Shravana Putrada Ekadashi falls on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi) of the fortnight of the waxing moon in Shravana month. On this day, couples observe a fast for 24 hours and worship Vishnu. They do this to beget a son. , who do not have a son for a long time after marriage, to beget a son.
