Hayagriva

The name Hayagriva consists of two words, ‘Haya’ meaning ‘horse’ and ‘Griva’ meaning ‘neck.’ This is the horse- necked avatar (incarnation) of Vishnu. Hayagriva is a lesser-known incarnation; nonetheless, he is an important deity in the Vaishnava tradition and is worshipped as the bestower of knowledge and wisdom and the Guru of Goddess Saraswati. The Hayagriva incarnation of Vishnu appears in Sacred texts such as Mahabharata, Bhagavata Purana, Matsya Purana, Skanda Purana, and Devi Bhagavata. Brahma sought Vishnu’s help to retrieve the Vedas, which were captured by two demons. Vishnu took this form to kill the two demons and return the Vedas to Brahma. Hayagriva is depicted with a human body and a horse’s head, brilliant white, with white garments and seated on a white lotus. In his four hands, he holds the Sacred disc of Vishnu, holy conch, a book, and the Jnana Mudra (the gesture of knowledge).
