Marriage – Its Significance

Our culture regards marriages not merely as a contract of association between an eligible man and a woman or the living together of a couple. Instead, they are regarded as divinely ordained sacred unions, as ‘Marriages are made in heaven’ is a firmly held belief here. Hence, greatest of importance is attached in uniting a boy and a girl in marriage, who are highly suitable for each other. It is also believed that it is Karma, the effects of the past actions that lead to good and not-so-good results in the life of an individual. Marital issues too remain so impacted by such karmic effects. Still it is believed that divine intervention can solve all such issues. It is the mantras, the sacred invocations, that can get such compassionate help from the Gods, and hence, their proper recitation with faith can solve all marriage-related problems and bestow a person with a harmonious married life.

Marriage Mantras

Many of the marriage mantras are addressed to Goddess Parvati, the divine mother, who, it is believed, can clear impediments and ensure an early and successful marriage.

Also, all prayers are normally started with invocatory hymns and these are generally known by the name of Dhyana Slokas. The mantras related to marriage too, follow this well-established pattern and begin with a Dhyana Sloka.

Called as the Swayamvara Parvati Dhyana Sloka, this is an invocation addressed to Goddess Parvati and offers prayers to her.

‘BalarkayuthaSuprabhamKarathaleRolambamalakritham
MalaamSandhadhatheemManoharaThanumMandasmithodyanmukheem
MandamMandamupeyushimVarayithumShambhumJaganmohinim
Vande Deva MunindraVandithaPadamIshtarthadhamParvathim’

This sloka, sings the praise of the divine mother, addresses her as the consort of the supreme God Shiva and as the one with the brilliance of an infant Sun,endowed with a beautiful form and incomparable charm, having a kind, pleasant and smiling face, and as well-respected by the saints and sages; and offers obeisance to her.
Now, let us go through the marriage-mantras that can remove impediments and help in successful marriages.

Swayamvara Parvati Mantra

‘Om Hreem Yoginim Yogini Yogeswari Yoga Bhayankari Sakala
Sthavara Jangamasya Mukha Hridayam Mama Vasamakarsha Akarshaya Swaha (Namaha)’

This mantra hails Devi Parvati as remaining united at all times with the Lord, who himself is a master-yogi, is of terrible form and remains as the very core of all the living and non-living things. This hymn then goes on to plead with her to provide the devotees with attraction and appeal.

This is considered an effective prayer for marriage and is required to be chanted 1008 times daily, for 108 days continuously.

Katyayani Mantra

Katyayani is an aspect of the divine Sakthi or Durga Devi. This mantra, addressed to Goddess Katyayani, is regarded a powerful tool for young girls to get married to good husbands. This is also believed to be the hymn chanted in the ancient times by the Gopis, the cowherds of Gokul and Brindavan for attaining none other than Lord Krishna himself as their husband. There is a strong belief that reciting this mantra with faith can get suitable husbands for girls of marriageable age and bless them with a happy married life.

Hence there is no surprise that Katyayani mantra remains perhaps as the most popular and the most-often chanted prayer for marriage.

'KatyaayaniMahaamaayeyMahaaYoginiyaDheeshwari
NandGopasutamDevi PathiMeyKuruTeyNamaha’

This addresses Goddess Katyayani Devi as Mahamayey, the supreme entity of all the great yoginis, and pleads with her, ‘Oh divine mother, I prostrate to you, please be kind enough to make Sri Krishna himself as my life partner’.

Parvati Mantra

‘SarvaMangalaMaangalyaeShiveSarvaarthaSaadhikae
SharanyeTryambakeGowri, Naaraayaninamosthuthe’

This is one of the highly popular prayers dedicated to Shiva’s consort Parvati, chanted for getting many benefits including an early and cordial marriage.
This mantra eulogizes the Goddess variously as auspiciousness personified, as the one who can do good and achieve all things, as the ray of light that can reveal consciousness and as the compassionate, universal mother; and offers salutations to her.

It is to be noted that these mantras should be recited accurately, with the right pronunciation of the Sanskrit words, and preferably, with a good understanding of their meaning. Hence, it is recommended that proper guidance be taken from knowledgeable elders or spiritual guides, before starting with their chanting. Also, complete devotion and faith are absolutely essential during the recitation, for earning divine grace.

When done so, these mantras can clear all obstacles that come in the way of a marriage and act as powerful remedies against all sorts of marriage related complications.
