Maha Lakshmi Mantra for Wealth And Prosperity

Maha Lakshmi or Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth, fertility and fortune. She is the divine consort of Lord Vishnu or Narayana, the supreme God of preservation and sustenance. Lakshmi is the universal mother, who is the embodiment of auspiciousness and prosperity, and hence is hailed as ‘Shri’ or ‘Shri Devi’. Lakshmi stays inseparable from Vishnu and together they are regarded as a single entity, called Lakshmi Narayana. Laskshmi’s principal abode remains to be the very heart of the Lord himself. This is the reason the Lord is also known as Shrinivasa or Shri Nivasa, that is, Nivasa, the place of residence of Shri, Goddess Lakshmi. 

The term ‘Lakshmi’ is believed to have been derived from expressions like ‘Laksa’, ‘Lakshya’, etc. which denote perception, goal, destination, etc. Her name is thus said to symbolize understanding the true purpose of existence.

Also known in many other names such as Kamala, Kalyani, Padma, Vishnupriya, etc., Maha Lakshmi is normally depicted as seated on a lotus with  four hands. These are said to represent the four fundamental purposes of human life, that is, Dharma, the righteousness; Artha, wealth; Kama, the worldly desires and pleasures; and Moksha, the ultimate liberation. She also carries a lotus in hand denoting consciousness and beauty. Money in the form of shining gold coins is often seen flowing out of one of her open hands.

Origin of Maha Lakshmi

According to legends, the Goddess emerged out of the great ocean of milk, when it was churned by the Devas and the Asuras, keeping mount Meru as the central pole and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. After many precious things, came out Goddess Maha Lakshmi from the depths of the ocean, at last, in all her resplendent glory. Clothed in shining yellow, her brilliance and divine beauty brightened all the worlds. As the Devas and the Asuras bowed before her, Lord Indra offered her the divine throne and Vishwakarma, the lotus flower.  As she stepped out, her eyes looked around, longing to see her Lord, the supreme God Vishnu. As soon as her sight fell on him, she walked towards him, put the garland that she was carrying around his neck and thus, joined him as his divine consort. The world celebrated this great happening and worshipped the divine couple as Lakshmi Narayana.
