10 Compatibility Factors of Marriage Matching

In India, many follow the tradition of horoscope matching of both the man and woman before adopting the vows of marriage. Ancient Rishis have devised methods to check the levels of adaptability and adjustability within marriage between the partners through matching the horoscopes by finding the poruthams or kootas which are 10 in number. Though they are 20 in number, only 10 are practiced now. Poruthams are found through studying the nakshatras or birth stars of both the man and woman. In judging horoscopes, the five factors dhinam, ganam, yoni, rasi, rajju, are considered important and if they match, then the horoscopes are compatible. Of these Rajju and dinam are the most important.

What it stands for?

Nakshatra porutham or Dina porutham – It represents longevity and health. The couple will have long life and good health, free from diseases.

Gana porutham – couples should be matched according to the compatibility of temperament (spiritual and mental compatibility). There are 3 types of ganams: deva, manusha, rakshasa. Deva ganam people are affectionate, kind natured, good character. Manusha ganam people would display both good and bad qualities. Rakshasa ganam people are rude, aggressive and rough.
