In India, many follow the tradition of horoscope matching of both the man and woman before adopting the vows of marriage. Ancient Rishis have devised methods to check the levels of adaptability and adjustability within marriage between the partners through matching the horoscopes by finding the poruthams or kootas which are 10 in number. Though they are 20 in number, only 10 are practiced now.
Poruthams are found through studying the nakshatras or birth stars of both the man and woman. The poruthams are the number of compatibility factors in a horoscope. There are 10 compatibility factors are also called dasama poruthams.
The 10 Matching Factors are:
- Nakshatra porutham or Dina porutham
- Rasi porutham
- Gana porutham
- Yoni porutham
- Rajju porutham
- Raasi athipathi porutham
- Mahendhra porutham
- Stree dheerkha porutham
- Vasiya porutham
- Vedha porutham
In judging horoscopes, the five factors dhinam, ganam, yoni, rasi, rajju, are considered important and if they match, then the horoscopes are compatible. Of these Rajju and dinam are the most important.
What it stands for?
Nakshatra porutham or Dina porutham – It represents longevity and health. The couple will have long life and good health, free from diseases.
Gana porutham – couples should be matched according to the compatibility of temperament (spiritual and mental compatibility). There are 3 types of ganams: deva, manusha, rakshasa. Deva ganam people are affectionate, kind natured, good character. Manusha ganam people would display both good and bad qualities. Rakshasa ganam people are rude, aggressive and rough.
Mahendra porutham – It represents wealth, children, longevity and well being. If there is no dinam and rasi athipathi poruthams, and if mahendra porutham is there, then that would suffice.
Yoni porutham – It stands for compatibility in matters of sex. If it is not good, then marriage should not be performed.
Rasi porutham – This is about the compatibility of the zodiac signs. It’s about mental compatibility of the couple. It represents unity of the couple, disputes and displeasures of husband and wife, problems from children.
Rajju porutham – It is the most important factor to be considered in match making. It tells about the longevity of the husband. Rajju represents the mangal sutra tied and denotes the mangalya bala or strength.Rajju dosham occurs when the birthstars of the man and the woman show the same Rajju.Rajju should be different for both the man and woman.
Rasi Athipathi porutham – It refers to the birthstars with their lords in the men and women horoscope, which should be in friendship with each other for a good compatible match. If they are not in friendship, the marriage would not last. But if they are friends the marriage would last lifelong.
Stree Dheerkha porutham – It tells about the life span of the woman and also says whether she will die before her husband at old age. Some say it indicates the prosperity and well being of the marriage partners after marriage.
Vasiya porutham – It tells about the attraction and adjustability between the couple. There would be mutual love and adjustment between the partners with inseparable temperament.
Vedha porutham – Vedha means affliction. It tells about the lack of affection between the couple. So when the birthstars of the man and woman are Vedha or opposing to each other, then the horoscopes do not match well. If there is agreement between the two, then it wards off all miseries in married life.
In Manonmani Vilas Panchangam 5 matches are considered important.
Either one of dinam or ganam should match
Either one of mahendra, rasi, nadi should match
All the three Yoni, rajju, vedha should match
Rajju is the most important match to the extent that even if all the others match except for rajju, then the match making should be avoided.
