Nataraja

Nataraja or Nataraj, also known as the Lord of Dance, is a form of Shiva. He represents Shiva’s role as creator, preserver, and destroyer of the universe and the never-ending cycle of time. Shiva’s dance pose is contained in a flaming halo. With his upper right hand, he holds the Damaru (hand drum that made the first sounds of creation), and his upper left-hand holds Agni (the fire that will destroy the universe). His lower right hand is in an Abhayamudra (the gesture bestows protection from fear) position. The dwarflike figure trampled by his right foot is Apasmara Purusha (illusion, which misleads humankind). Shiva’s left-hand points to his raised left foot, signifying refuge for the troubled soul, and his lustrous hair is seen flying from the energy of the cosmic dance. This ecstatic dance, called the Tandava, is very powerful and was performed by Nataraja to remove ignorance, arrogance, delusions, negativity, and the bondage of humans.

Nataraja Homa (Fire Lab Invoking the Dancing Form of Shiva)

Introduction to Nataraja Homa

‘Nataraja’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Nata,’ meaning dance or drama. Raja means king. Nataraja can be interpreted as the ‘King of Dance.’ Shiva’s dance in Tillai (Chidambaram) sets the base for depicting Shiva in dance forms. As Nataraja, Shiva is represented in his roles as the creator, preserver, and destroyer. His cosmic dance, the Tandav, can create and destroy the universe. The Ananda Tandav is the ‘dance of bliss.’ Performing the Nataraja Homa can bestow creative skills, stability, success, and prosperity. It removes negative forces and grants positive energy.

Unique Traits of Nataraja

In Nataraja, Shiva represents the source of all movement within the cosmos, represented by the arch of flames. The purpose is to remove humanity from the illusion of the ‘self’ and the ‘world.’ He represents apocalypse and creation. He eliminates the imaginary world or ‘Maya’ and transforms it into power and enlightenment. Through his endless cosmic dance of creation, preservation, embodiment, destruction, protection, and release, Nataraja denotes a deep understanding of the universe. Performing the Nataraja Homa helps us dispel ignorance and negative forces, enhances creative skills and positive energy, and bestows vigor, stability, success, and prosperity.

Description of Nataraja Homa

Nataraja is an important symbol of Shiva. Creation of the world, its maintenance and destruction, concealment of the soul, its liberation, and subduing ignorance are represented by his dance. Its endless cycle of destruction and regeneration moves in tune with the beat of his drum and the rhythm of his steps.
