Nandi is depicted as a white or black bull, adorned with a necklace of bells in a seated position, facing Lord Shiva. He is also represented as half-human and half-bull, wearing beautiful clothes, ornaments, and garlands, with his hands holding a conch, a deer, and a staff, and blessing his devotees. He is often found in front of the Shiva Lingam in most temples and is worshipped along with Lord Shiva.

He is usually depicted as a seated bull wearing a garland of bells in front of Shiva’s shrine in most of the Shiva temples. As per Puranas, Nandi was born with a diamond armor to Sage Shilada. He did severe penance to become the gatekeeper and vehicle of Shiva. In Sanskrit, Nandi means happiness and satisfaction and in Tamil means to flourish, indicating the traits of the Sacred bull.
