Bali agreed readily, but Vamana became huge in size and covered the entire earth and heaven with his two steps. Then he asked Bali where to keep his third step.

Bali, without hesitation, offered his head for the third step, and Vamana pushed him down into the netherworld. But he gave Bali a boon whereby he could visit earth and see his subjects once a year on the day of Kartik Amavasya. Hence, this day is also called Bali Padyami.

Pooja Vidhi for Kartik Amavasya 2023

Arise early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Sit in a clean and serene place for the Pooja.

Light a diya/lamp in front of the deity. You can worship Shiva or Vishnu on this day.

Offer fruits, flowers, sweets, and other things, like milk, honey, etc., to the deity.

Chant prayers and Mantras that are dedicated to the deity. (Chant the Mantra, “Om Namah Shivaya,” if you are worshipping Shiva, or “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” if the deity you are worshipping is Vishnu).

Offer incense and light agarbatti to create a pleasant and peaceful atmosphere.

Perform aarti. Sing bhajans or devotional songs.
