What is Lagna?

Lagna is the Ascendant, a Sanskrit word for the rising zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at a specific time and location. It defines the ascending sign at the time of an individual's birth and is the connection between the soul and new life on earth.

12 Houses in Natal Chart

In Vedic Astrology, the houses define and divide exact areas of a person's life based on his/her horoscope (natal chart giving accurate date, time, and place of birth). The different houses govern different areas of an individual's life.

There are twelve houses in a horoscope. The time of birth signifies Lagna, and it is where the first house starts. Lagnaoccupies a special place in the first house in the horoscope and reflects one's nature and personality.

The judgement of the respective houses from a given house is used for analyzing everything.

Lagna Chart

First House (Tanu Bhava) from Each House

The first house is also known as Lagna or Ascendant and is the house of physical features. It represents the self, you, your physical appearance, personality, nature, temperament, and health. It affects the choices you make in life and the way you want others to perceive you through your attitude, perceptions, and opinions.
For example, the 4th house is your mother, and the 1st house is you. Judging the 1st house tells about you. The same way, judging the 4th house tells about your mother.

Second House (Dhan Bhava) from Each House

The second house signifies Dhan (wealth) or possessions. This includes your finances, possessions like house, vehicles, investments, furniture. The second house is not limited to material things alone; it also includes intangible things like possessing a talent/skill.

For example, the 5th house becomes mother's wealth. The 4th house becomes sibling's wealth. The 11th house is the wealth of your career, as it denotes income from your job.

Third House (Sahaj Bhava)from Each House

The third house governs the mental disposition of a person,mental intelligence, good memory, communication, siblings, interests, and habits. It relates to different modes of communication like television, media, writing, among others. Different professions related to communication fall in this dominion.

For example, the 3rd house from the 2nd house is the 4th house that becomes the house of comfort. The 3rd house from the 4th house is the 6th house that begets enemies. The 3rd house from there is the 8th house where the struggle is seen.

Fourth House (Bandhu Bhava) from Each House

The fourth house relates to one's roots, relation with one's mother, land, and vehicles. In Vedic Astrology, this house is called Bandhu Bhava and is associated with the domestic happiness of an individual.

For example, the 4th house from the 9th house is your father's house and conveyance. The 4th house from the 4th house is your maternal grandmother.

Fifth House (Putra Bhava) from Each House

The fifth house is called the Putra Bhava that signifies creativity, playfulness, joy, romance, and mental intelligence, the ability to create. It also relates to learning, luck, and good fortune.

For example, the 5th house from the 5th house is your grandchild(children). The 5th house from the 9th house is your father's children, meaning you. The 5th house from the 2nd house is the product of wealth that may include enemies, debts, and worries.

Sixth House (Ari Bhava) from Each House

The sixth house is associated with an individual's health, well-being, and daily routine followed.  The physical features are in the first house, and the daily choices that may affect the body are found in the sixth house. The sixth house is also known as Ari Bhava (Ari means enemy). This house relates to enemies, obstacles, and debts. However, if an individual has Rahu sitting in the sixth house in the natal chart, then it is impossible to defeat.

For example, cheating on your spouse outside marriage,then the 6th house from the 7th house is that individual.  The 6th house from the 9th house is your father's ill -health and debts.

Seventh House(Yuvati Bhava) from Each House

The seventh house sits directly from across the Ascendant, the first house. This house is called Yuvati Bhava. This is the house of your spouse/partner. This house signifies partnerships that include business partnerships also and deals with the darker side of one's relationship.

For example, the 7th house from the 5th house is your child's spouse. The 7th house from the 3rd house is your younger sibling's wife.

Eighth House (Randhra Bhava) from Each House

The eighth house rules over longevity, death, and sudden losses, gains, and share of the property.  This house is called the Randhra Bhava. If Saturn happens to sit in the eighth house in the birth chart, the chances are that the individual will inherit paternal property.

For example, eighth from the 4th house is the age and inheritance of your mother. Eighth from the 8th house is the house of longevity.

Ninth House (Dharma Bhava) from Each House

The ninth house is defined by truth, dreams, intuitions, and principles. This house is known as Dharma Bhava in Vedic Astrology and is associated with ethics, dharma, religious instincts, good karma, higher learning, and one's inclination towards charity and good deeds. This house signifies luck, fortune, and favors.

For example, the 9th is the father of any house. The ninth house from the ninth house is the action of past life. The 9th house (father) from the 2nd house (wealth) is the 10th house that signifies actions (karma).

Tenth House (Karma Bhava) from Each House

The tenth house deals with your karma – profession, reputation, and prestige. Planetary positions in this house define your occupation. If Saturn is harmonious with other planets, this planet can become the most powerful ally.

For example, the 10th house from the 9th house is your father's profession. The 10th house from the 7th house is your spouse's profession.

Eleventh House (Labh Bhava) from Each House

The eleventh house is the house of prosperity and is called in Vedic Astrology, Labh Bhava. Labh means gains. It gives a strong indication of income, wealth, gaining name, and fame and determines what brings you profits. The eleventh house also governs your social circle, friends, well-wishers, and relations with one's elder brother.

For example, the 11th house from the 7th house is your spouse's friends.

Twelfth House (Vyaya Bhava) from Each House

The twelfth house in Vedic Astrology indicates the end of your life cycle and the beginning of your spiritual journey. It is called the house of unconscious and self-undoing. It signifies detachment like a separation from partners, parents, and friends. The detachment can be in the form of death. This house governs intangible things that include dreams, emotions, and secrets.

For example, the 12th house from the 8th house is the loss of age. So, the 7th house is the house of death. The 12th house from the 4th house indicates loss of property and house and is the 3rd house.
