Legend of Sarabeswara:

Sarabeswara is a fierce form of Lord Shiva, who took this form to pacify Lord Vishnu’s Narasimha avatar. Vishnu incarnated as the ferocious half-lion, half-human being called Narasimha to save his young devotee, Prahlad, from his tyrant father, the demon king, Hiranyakashipu. The demon king did not like the fact that his son was devoted to Vishnu. He tried to kill his son many times but failed, thanks to Vishnu’s intervention. Finally, Vishnu took the avatar of Narasimha to kill him in order to save Prahlad. Hiranyakashipu had received a boon of invincibility that protected him from death.

Thanks to the boon, death would not come to him either by man or beast, devil, nor god, and it would neither come during the day or by night, with steel, stone or wood, on earth or in the sky, nor indoors or outdoors. So he became arrogant, domineering, and egoistic. He wanted to be regarded as a God and began a reign of terror, hurting and killing everyone, and aimed to conquer the three worlds. However, his own son, Prahlada, refused to acknowledge him as the lord of the universe. When the demon hit a pillar with his mace and asked his son if Vishnu would come out of it, Vishnu as Narasimha emerged from it. Narasimha killed the demon on the threshold of his palace during the twilight hour when it was neither day nor night.

But, after killing Hiranyakashipu, Narasimha’s fury did not abate. The other gods were not able to calm him down, either. Even his consort, Goddess Lakshmi, failed to do so. Narasimha’s fury was such that the entire universe seemed to be in peril. It was then that Shiva took the form of Sarabeswara, a fierce creature that combined a human, a bird, and a lion. It had 8 legs, 2 wings, 4 hands, sharp teeth, and nails. The two fought for long until Narasimha calmed down.

The Vedas and Puranas talk about the advent of Sarabeswara. The Rig Veda, Atharva Veda, Skanda Purana, Linga Purana, and Brahmanda Purana mention it. the Vedas say that all sins can be removed by chanting the powerful Mantra of Lord Sarabeswara. In Linga Purana, Sage Veda Vyasa says that people who worship Sarabeswara can get relief from many kinds of afflictions.
