Poojas and Mantras for the second day of Navaratri
Navaratri 2nd day Pooja - Goddess Brahmacharini Devi
The second day of Navaratri Pooja glorifies Goddess Brahmacharini, who is worshiped with great dedication by devotees. The Pooja is performed on ‘Dwitiya Tithi,’ the second day of the waxing phase of the moon in the month of ‘Ashvin.’ Brahamacharini means an unmarried and youthful woman. Thus, Goddess Brahmacharini appears in the form of a maiden who is endowed with supreme wisdom. She is depicted with two hands carrying a rosary and a Kamandalu. The Goddess is popular as a deity who blesses her devotees with wisdom and knowledge. Goddess Brahmacharini is a benign and benevolent deity who inspires people to be calm and serene and also galvanizes them to be confident of their own abilities.
Story of Goddess Brahmacharini
Legend states that in ancient days, Goddess Parvati was first born as ‘Sati’ in the home of ‘Daksha Prajapati,’ who was ignorant of Lord Shiva’s powers and thus loathed him. She reincarnated later to ‘Himavan,’ who was a virtuous and righteous king. This maiden form of Goddess Parvati is known as ‘Brahmacharini.’ After severe penance, Parvati finally won over Lord Shiva, and they were thus united. During her period of penance Parvati survived only on flowers, fruits, and even leaves; eventually, she stopped eating altogether, surviving only on air. Hence, Brahmacharini also came to be hailed as ‘Aparna’—one who lived even without leaves.
Importance of Goddess Brahmacharini
Hindu scriptures portray Goddess Brahmacharini as the ruler of planet Mars. Thus, she is venerated to nullify the malefic effects of ‘Mangal Dosha’ arising from the unfavorable stance of mars in the natal chart. The Goddess bestows good fortune and wipes out the sorrows of her devotees; she also removes any complications arising due to mental afflictions.
