dateSeptember 27, 2018

About Navaratri Pooja

The nine-day Navaratri Pooja celebrations are observed in the Hindu month of ‘Ashvin,’ which corresponds to the months of September-October according to the English calendar. Though there are four seasonal Navaratris in a year, the ‘Sharad Navaratri in the autumn is the most significant. The Navaratri Pooja is celebrated as ‘Durga Pooja’ in the eastern regions of the country, especially in the state of West Bengal. The festival is observed grandly to commemorate Goddess Durga’s victory over the Demon ‘Mahishasura’, after an epic battle of nine nights. The tenth day, when the demon was finally killed is observed as ‘Vijayadasami.’ Each day of the Navaratri festival glorifies a different Goddess, all of whom are basically different forms of the three major Mother Goddesses in the Hindu pantheon, namely—Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Parvati.

First Day of Navaratri

The first day of Navaratri Pooja glorifies Goddess Shailaputri Devi. This day falls on ‘Pratipada Tithi,’ during the waxing phase of the moon in the month of ‘Ashvin.’ The scriptures describe the Goddess as the daughter of the mountains. ‘Shila’ means rock and ‘Putri’ means daughter. Maa Shailaputri  is depicted riding a bull and carrying a Trident and lotus flower in her hands. She also wears a symbol of the moon on her forehead. The Goddess is venerated as a highly benevolent deity and worshiped with great dedication by devotees.

Story of Goddess Shailaputri

Goddess Sati, the consort of Lord Shiva, sacrificed herself in the pyre lit by her father, ‘King Daksha.’ The Goddess resorted to this extreme step, as she could not bear the insult heaped on her husband by her father. She was subsequently reborn as ‘Parvati’ to the virtuous king Himavan, ruler of the mountains. Parvati observed severe penance to win the approval of Lord Shiva, and on Brahma’s intervention, ultimately succeeding in getting married to Shiva. Though the penance had wasted her body, Lord Shiva immersed her in the waters of the ‘Ganga’ flowing from his hair, and she ultimately regained her lost beauty.
