How to Energize Rudraksha

A Rudraksha is a bead that has sacred connotations and is used in Hinduism. The bead is the dried seed of an evergreen tree called the Elaeocarpus Granitus that grows in the Himalayan foothills, including India, Nepal, Indonesia, and select parts of South East Asia. Rudraksha comes from ‘Rudra,’ referring to a fiery form of Shiva, the powerful Supreme Being of Shaivism, and ‘Aksha,’ which means teardrop. It means Shiva’s (Rudra’s) teardrops.
According to ancient Vedic scriptures, Shiva was deep in meditation. After a thousand years, he awakened from the state of meditation. Upon opening his eyes, teardrops fell to the ground. Mother Earth enveloped the teardrops, which gave birth to seeds that grew into Rudraksha trees. The seed of Rudraksha is said to contain the secrets of evolution of the cosmos within it.
Lord Shiva is seen wearing Rudraksha beads on his head, arms, and hands. This initiated the spiritual, religious, and physical significance of the Rudraksha.
Rudraksha has religious significance and is used as a ‘Jap Mala’ for chanting sacred mantras. It forms a protective shield against negative influences. Besides, it is believed to have healing powers that can cure mental stress and diseases. It is used by people seeking to overcome obstacles and attain their goals in life. It bestows peace and happiness. For the spiritually inclined, the Rudraksha seeks to enhance their spiritual growth.

People energize the Rudraksha beads in various ways after receiving them.
To initiate the process, you can sprinkle some holy water from the Ganges river. You can place them at your Pooja Sthal (meditation altar) and apply some Chandan (sandalwood) paste on them. Light Agarbathi (incense sticks) and allow the beads to absorb the fragrant fumes. You can offer white flowers. In your mind’s eye, visualize Shiva and chant the sacred mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ 108 times. Offer prayers to the deity after that. The Rudraksha can be kept at the altar or worn.
For a more elaborate procedure, you can start by choosing an auspicious day and time. Any day in the month of Shravan is also believed to be auspicious. You can bless the beads or ask your Guru or priest to do so.
Some of the items for the energizing ritual include nine leaves of the Peepal tree on a plate. You can keep a separate plate for the offerings that include cloth, coconut, fruits, flowers, and betel nut. Place the Dhoop (incense sticks), camphor, and a lamp in the ritual. You can also keep sandalwood and aromatic oil. Offer a Ghee lamp. Offer rice preferably mixed with Asthagandha.
Have a bath and arrange everything required for the blessings. Sit on a mat facing east. Use a mixture of cow dung, urine, milk, ghee, and curd, called the Panchgavya. Otherwise, you can use the option of Panchamritam, mixed with raw milk, honey, sugar, ghee, and curd. Apply the Panchgavya or Panchamritam on the Rudraksha beads first.
Energize the Rudraksha with water from the Ganges filled in a pure copper pot with Kusha grass for sprinkling. Place nine Peepal leaves on a plate and an empty plate in front of this for the offerings. Chant the sacred mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ three times.
Sprinkle holy water on the Rudraksha with Kusha grass from the copper pot. Then, dip a flower in the sandalwood and aromatic oil and touch the beads. Offer Dhoop to the beads. Repeat the process. Offer rice to the plate kept for offerings in front of the Rudraksha.
Burn camphor, circling it thrice in front of the plate. Chant the Gayatri Mantra and Surya Mantra. Chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, and offer rice to the plate before the Rudraksha, after each round. Chant the Beej Mantra nine times. Then, bow in supplication and chant the last prayer.
Other methods of energizing the Rudraksha beads include choosing an auspicious day where you can perform the ritual yourself. Place the Rudraksha on a new plate. You can wash the beads in raw milk with a pinch of sugar or honey. Clean the beads with holy water and chant the sacred mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ till the milk is poured in, and the water. The Rudraksha then creates a divine aura of protection around you. You may donate something to the needy after this ritual.
In case you are not performing the ritual yourself, you may visit a Shiva temple on a Monday and request the priest to perform the Rudra Abishekam for you. He will initiate the ritual by stating your name and then start energizing the Rudraksha beads. He will offer flowers, incense, water, milk and bless the beads with mantras chanted in your name. When this ritual is completed, you may take the Rudraksha in your hands, thank God, offer prayers for your wellbeing, and chant the sacred mantra of ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ nine times. You may donate some food or money to help a needy person.
