Rose Day – February 7, 2024
Roses, especially red roses, have always been symbols of love, romance, and passion. It is regarded as the flower of love. The ancient Greeks associated red roses with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty, love, and sexuality. Aphrodite’s beauty was supposedly so great that roses sprang up in her path when she walked. Hence, red roses came to symbolize love and desire, and people used them in romantic gestures and rituals. Red roses are also linked to Adonis, the Greek god of beauty and desire. Mythology says that a wild boar killed Adonis while he was hunting. His blood stained the white roses nearby, and they became red. Thus, red roses were seen as symbols of sacrifice and passion.
During the Middle Ages, the rose came to be seen as a symbol of love and passion. Knights gave red roses to their ladies, and poets often used them to describe female beauty. In the literature and art forms of the Middle Ages, artists and writers used the imagery of red roses to represent love’s intensity and the deep emotions felt by lovers. Valentine’s Day became very commercialized in the 14th and 15th centuries. Merchants and traders began to sell flowers, cards, and other gifts to celebrate it, and red roses became immensely popular as symbols of love, romance, and passion. Valentine’s week, therefore, starts with people giving big bouquets of roses to their sweethearts.

Chocolate Day – February 9, 2024
Chocolates are sweet, and so is love. Love is what gives life a sweet flavor, so it is no wonder that chocolates are associated with Valentine’s Week. Heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are ubiquitous in shops as Valentine’s Week approaches. They are very integral to Valentine’s Day.
From the time of the Aztecs, chocolate was seen as an aphrodisiac (sexual stimulant). Giacomo Casanova called it the “elixir of love” and the the infamous Marquis de Sade praised its potency. But it was sweet-maker Cadbury who connected Valentine’s Day with chocolate in the 19th century.
The Victorians were fond of ornamentation, so Richard Cadbury, in 1861, launched “Fancy Boxes” of chocolates. The boxes had a heavily decorated lid and contained bonbons filled with marzipan, chocolate-flavored ganache, and fruity crèmes, all resting on beds of lace doilies. In 1868, Cadbury created a heart-shaped Fancy Box for Valentine’s Day. After eating the chocolates, sentimental Victorians did not throw away the boxes. They would use it to store love letters, lockets of hair, and other mementos.
Thus, February 9, or Chocolate Day, is the perfect day to indulge your beloved with treats like chocolates and candy.
Teddy Day – February 10, 2024
People gift soft toys like Teddy bears to their lover on Valentine’s Day. Teddy bears were invented in 1902. As they are cute and cuddly, they make perfect gifts for both children and adults in love. Teddy bears bring a smile to our faces, and they are nice to snuggle up with. While candy and flowers don’t last long, teddy bears last a lifetime, and they remind your partner of your love. Teddy bears and similar stuffed animals also have a calming and comforting effect, says research. Maybe because of all these reasons, giving a Teddy bear to one’s beloved became an entrenched ritual during Valentine’s Week.
Promise Day – February 11, 2024
