Vamana, the dwarf avatar of Vishnu, appeared when the demon king Bali held sway over the entire universe. Vamana went to Bali’s court and requested as much land as he could cover in three paces. The king agreed. Taking a gigantic form, Vamana covered the earth and the realm between earth and heaven with two steps. As there was no more space, Bali lowered his head and told Vamana to place his foot on it for the third step. Vamana did so, and sent Bali down to the netherworld. The Vamana Gayatri mantra is said to bestow skillful development for physically challenged people, offer relief from mental agony, and also remove obstacles. The best time to chant it is Ekadasi thithi and Saturdays. It should be recited 11, 108, or 1008 times.
