Chapter 3 of Devi Mahatmyam narrates the killing of the demon, Mahishasura. After his army of demons and his commander were slain by Goddess Chandika, Mahishasura kept changing his form many times to evade the Goddess. He turned into a buffalo, a man, an elephant, and a lion. But the Goddess got the better of him eventually and killed him. The Devi Mahatmyam comprises chapters 81-93 of the Markandeya Purana. It narrates the stories and exploits of Durga in her fight against the demons. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke the Goddess’ blessings and protection.
